Otaki is 1 hour north of Wellington by car on the Kapiti coast with its great beaches and bush. We live in a rural setting about 2km from the main state highway 1.
Our place is a specialist heritage rose nursery (all of our roses are grown from cuttings in planter bags and supplied by mail order all year round). We also propagate other plants from our 3 acre country garden (which is open to the public). We have a small gift shop and sell pottery and garden art. We also have workshops on gardening and arts/crafts in our new barn. We have a 4 acre run down pear orchard. We also have a few beef cattle, 6 chickens, 3 bantams, 6 ducks plus ducklings and chicks and a small dog. You would be sharing our beautiful heritage home built in the 1890s. Most of the house has been renovated - just the study to go.
Work involves gardening, weeding in the nursery, and at certain times of year, helping with rose cuttings (June/July), mulching the garden (Sept), potting up rooted rose cuttings (Nov/Dec). Nov/Dec is our busiest time when we have coach loads of visitors to see the garden as the roses are at their best then. We also hold a 9 day festival of pottery and garden art in January each year.
We are a couple in our 40s. Grant works off site in his corporate job each day and Karen works permanently at the farm. We can offer accommodation and full board in return for 4 hours work per day. We are flexible with the hours e.g. if you want to work a full day and then have a day off to explore. Minimum stay would be 4 nights. We cannot accommodate vegetarians unless you are prepared to cook. We eat a lot of home grown beef plus locally sourced lamb. If you are in to cooking we love trying lots of different foods (including vegetarian). We are non smokers.
We are open 6 days a week, so please note I am unable to regularly leave the property to show you around. It would be an advantage to have a car. However I am happy to pick you up or drop you off for buses, trains, to the beach, shops etc.
