We are a small rural farm / community in rural near Yucatan, Mexico. We are aiming at being as close to self-sufficient for food, water and energy as possible but this will obviously take some time. We will use organic techniques for growing our own supplies along with permaculture design principles for layout. We will be minimising consumption of power and water to create a more harmonious environment, which we believe will be also more friendly as a result. We also aim to help the local community by providing direct employment and sharing ideas and potentially helping with local businesses too. We are hoping in the future to run paid courses on sustainability to generate a small but necessary income, but at the moment we are looking for volunteers to live and help in more rustic surroundings.
We started from scratch in November 2011 so you would still have a large input. We already have a many very happy volunteers (see reviews) and as we expand, build more cabanas, clear abandoned farm land for growing and reforestation we will need more help. We are looking for volunteers to commit to 35 hours per week, in return for all food and accommodation, leaving you time to explore around the Yucatan peninsula. This is because it takes time to collect you from Valladolid, show you some basics, introduce to to the farm and some project ideas and for you to settle in before you are of any real benefit, so we are looking for a commitment of at least 3 weeks to make it worthwhile for you and for us. Otherwise it could well be general unskilled labour like weeding and clearing paths and growing areas (much like the other HelpX/WOOF sites). If you want to contribute more, clearly we are more than happy! We are looking for everything, from builders (wooden and stone and cement construction) and electricians, web designers, labourers and all general farm type (unmechanised) help.
We are not looking to make a profit, or sell any products we grow or make. We may be interested in trading locally for skills, labour or other things we need, in a manner which benefits all.
This would be an excellent opportunity to learn great skills, in a great location, with great weather and are interested in people who can contribute with enthusiasm, skills and ideas. We are located 2 hours bus ride from Cancun and Merida, about an hour's drive from the Caribbean in Tulum. We have 10 hectares (24 acres) of forest/jungle and an enormous cenote (sink hole with water, dia 80m) which we use for swimming and necessary water supply.
We have already hosted many happy volunteers, listen to their feedback to improve our services and we have secure and covered accommodation (thatched cabanas), composting toilet facilities, showering facilities (unheated and unplumbed). Cabanas are shared and mixed depending on the volunteers.
