We have a vacancy for a man who is interested in free, personalised face-to-face English lessons in our home here on Kangaroo Island, South Australia, in exchange for helping us. This opportunity is for a man who normally works in labouring or other physical employment. He must be physically fit, a cheerful and willing worker who is able to work without constant supervision, be able to think for himself and to improvise when necessary. If he has building, lifting and shifting skills, and driving experience and licence, that would be beneficial. Minimum stay is for six weeks. A longer stay of up to a few months would be OK provided we get on well together as family. His understanding of the English language must be of a level where communication is not difficult, so that he understands instructions without confusion.
He will live in our home, with all meals provided, and be treated as a member of our family. While he is with us he will be immersed in the English language all the time, receive at least an hour of personal, one-to-one English lessons a day Monday to Friday, and be able to ask questions about English and get extra help with the language all the time.
This is NOT paid employment, nor do you pay for English tutoring, meals or accommodation. It is an excellent opportunity for a physically fit, willing male helper, to rapidly improve his English, be part of an Australian family, to learn about the Australian rural culture, to live with kangaroos and close to other Australian animals, and to explore one of Australia’s top iconic tourist destinations.
To apply, please message me with details of your work experience and skills, your age, and how long you would be interested in staying from mid-June.

We can accept a helper who comes to STUDY ENGLISH. You live with us as a private English student-volunteer helper.

MINIMUM STAY IS TWO weeks (Sunday evening to Friday evening of the second week), or as many weeks as you choose.

You are a helper in exchange for accommodation and being part of our family, the same as in all other Helpx host homes, and pay for your English lessons.

COST: Aus$320 per week for lessons. This covers 12 hours of private English lessons each week, plus lots of extra, free help while we are working and socialising together. You are immersed in English and receive English language help almost all your waking hours.

Twelve hours of private English lessons per week, Monday to Friday, We do NOT accept student-helpers for less time, nor do we accept people looking for free English lessons - please do not waste your time or ours by asking).

You can choose from conversational, business or special purpose English, with a mix of sit down study and activity based learning.

Because you are studying exactly what you want to, and a program is worked out to suit your learning needs, you can learn much more quickly and enjoyably than in an ordinary language class. You are hearing and using English all the time you are here and improving your English skills in a natural way; it does not feel at all like being in school!

While studying English, you can also learn a range of simple living skills such as propagating plants, using herbs for health and basic cooking, making crafts from natural materials. Learn about the natural environment, spend time with our hand-raised kangaroos, and see some of the Island, all while improving your English in a natural, friendly atmosphere.

We have moved into Kingscote town temporarily, but will move back to the farm as soon as we have accommodation there. At the house, help is mainly in maintenance, cleaning, helping establish a garden, and craftwork.

Native animals such as kangaroos, possums, and koalas live in the wild at our farm, and our aim is to have the farm as a safe haven for them. We have beef cattle and goats. After my extended illness, our plant and flower bulb nursery is very neglected – help would be appreciated in getting it back into order, and at times assistance with other work at the farm.

We accept helper-English students who are self-motivated, who don't mind rolling up their sleeves and getting their hands dirty, and who are able to improvise when necessary.

We treat each of our students as part of our family and do everything to help you enjoy your time and to learn lots of English.

If you are interested in being an English student-volunteer helper please contact us and ask for an emailed application form.
