Hi everyone, we have found all our helpers now for 2017 season. Thanks so much everybody!

The property is still a work in progress, and we need a lot of help! As well as regular gardening work, we need help clearing trails, cutting firewood, and maintenance related tasks. In 2017 we plan to construct another couple of buildings (a garage and another cabin) so we'll need help with that as well. Work is divided between trail clearing, firewood splitting, cabin construction, and gardening. We also need help with painting, including painting the barn roof and siding. Strong, willing helpers appreciated! Small but comfortable cabin accommodation, separate washroom/shower facilities, and great food provided. MORE DETAILS BELOW:

About us: Willow Healing Space is on the world-famous Cabot Trail in the beautiful Cape Breton Highlands. We run retreats for people to come and get away from the urban grind, relax & get back to an appreciation of nature.

About the property: We are off-grid and secluded, set back 3.5 kms from the Cabot Trail along a gravel lane. The house is a log cabin with 3 bedrooms & 1 bathroom, oil-fired heat as well as a wood-burning stove. We have a small cabin for volunteer accommodation, and a separate washcabin close by with flush toilets & hot shower. We have 25 acres, of which 4 acres are lawn and garden, the rest is forest, featuring many small brooks, streams and waterfalls. We have apple trees, raspberries, blackberries, grapevines, vegetable and herb beds as well as perennial gardens. The garden is sheltered on 3 sides by forested mountains, and we have a small spring-fed pond. We own an additional 128 acres of forest close by.

Organic Methods used: Composting, manuring, mulching, organic pest control including coffee grounds/eggshells, beer to control slugs (yes, I said beer!), companion planting, beneficial weeds, staggered planting, dishwater to control aphids, organic soil amendment if needed i.e. wood ash/compost/manure dressing.

Tasks will include:
Gardening, including tilling (using motor-driven rototiller as well as hand tools), raking, harrowing, planting, planting seeds in seed trays, tending seedlings, watering, weeding, clearing new beds, tending growing seedlings, more weeding, mowing lawn (ride-on mower), using gas-powered strimmer, pruning, vegetable and fruit harvesting. We will train you on use of all power tools, including the ride-on mower. Most gardening work is done using hand tools and muscle power.
Cider, jam & preserve making, bread making.
Dog walking.
Construction, including: laying concrete, wood framing, roofing.
Maintenance, including: painting, roofing.
Forest Management, including: cutting trails, cutting, splitting & stacking firewood (power splitter - we will train you), clearing up debris, raking, pruning.
Retreat help, including: welcoming retreat guests, parking cars, preparing meals, cleaning up after meals, washing dishes, making beds, making runs into town for supplies, preparing retreat activities, preparing firepit, monitoring firepit while in use, helping retreat guests as and when necessary.

We are friendly folks who like the peace & quiet of nature. Anne is a Reiki Master, and Paul is a wilderness survival instructor. We enjoy the exchange of cultures and would welcome the chance to get to know people from a different country. We have one dog, a very gentle and friendly golden retriever, and one cat, a small but feisty ginger tom. Thank you for your interest in Willow Healing Space!
