Set in the rolling hills of Northumberland County, our 120 acre farm is a mixture of field, forest, meadow and wetland with a beautiful view of Lake Ontario in the distance. We bought the farm in the fall of 2012 and we now have two growing seasons under our belts. We moved to the country to live a more peaceful and self-sustainable existence, closing the gap between field and table. We grow and raise our food using organic and permaculture principles learned through our travels around the world and we buy from local farmers as well. We are a community farm opening up our doors to those who want to get closer to the land but might not have access to it. We offer cooking classes, venues for events, walking trails, shared land use and permaculture consultation. We also have a farm store on site open weekends offering goods from our farm as well as our neighbours.

This year we are expanding our gardening operations to supply produce for all our meals, feed visitors and stock our store. Our new, big, commercial kitchen will be very busy cooking for family and workers, preserving and storing food for the winter, baking, preserving, holding cooking classes, making box lunches and hosting dinner parties. We will have chickens again this year, both for eggs and meat, goats, horses and possibly cows or pigs! So we have lots of work adding fencing, shelters and waters systems for the animals.

Construction continues on many outbuildings we are renovating or building including a workshop, art studio, outdoor shower, yoga platform, and water catchment structures. We are also working in our forest cutting down trees for building materials, clearing paths and thinning out the cedar. And, last but definitely not least, our straw-bale home is nearing completion but some interior work and landscaping is still needed.

Our farm has a communal atmosphere with everyone gathering together at meal times to cook, share stories, strategize and get to know one another. We loved working as wwoofers side by side with people from all over the world and ended up hosting 13 amazing volunteers last year!

If you want to volunteer for Headwaters, we are looking for people who would like experience in organic gardening, cooking, forestry or construction. We ask that you work a minimum of 25-30 hours a week. In return we offer comfortable accommodations, 3 meals a day (we can accommodate vegetarian), and transportation to local areas. We are a 15 minute drive to some great restaurants, shops, lovely swimming beaches and many recreational activities. The train station is very close and Toronto is just over an hour away. Our beautiful lake-filled cottage country, just north of us, is a favourite weekend destination.
