We are a small business based on the breeding of the very rare (300 worldwide) and probably the oldest breed of horse in the world, the small sized Skyrian horse. As we receive no help whatsoever from the State or the EU, the whole conservation of the breed depends upon our volunteers' and our own work! We are also involved in the conservation of old seeds and particularly of the skyrian "fava" (split pea), a traditional greek legume which has been cultivated on the island for 4000 years and which we try to protect. We need help with the horses and also with some jobs in the fields all year round. Experience with horses is a bonus and you can help train them (ground work but no riding as our horses are "mini", ie. suitable only for small children) but if you don't have any it's not a problem as we will show you what you need to know, the work with the horses is quite easy. If you come during the winter, the work will consist in cleaning fields, feeding horses, fixing and painting fences, building shelters, etc. During the summer months, the main job consists in preparing the horses and leading rides for the children. You should enjoy walking!
You can also contact us if you have any special skills (photography, communication, translation...) which could be helpful to us in any way in our conservation programmes.
Skyros, as a greek island is very busy in the summer and very quiet in the winter, but we always have lots of things to do and the village is quite lively in the evenings! Half of the island is uninhabited and there are many hiking paths in the mountains and forests where you will be able to enjoy the beautiful sceneries and endemic animals and plants.
We will provide you with a room and bathroom in the winter, and during the summer there will be organized camping right next to the farm - bathrooms and showers included. Tents will be provided but you can also bring your own tent if you wish. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided, and we usually cook and eat all together.
Stay at the farm: 3 weeks minimum.
