BEAUTIFUL HOCKLEY MEADOWS FARM
We are closed for the winter . But welcome helpers agin in the spring.
Many of our helpers return for a second visit, some even for a third stay. We can usually find a spare bedroom for returning helpers in our part of the house.
Our farm, on top of the Niagara Escarpment, is fifty minutes from Toronto International Airport. The Notawassaga River runs through the property. We raise beef cattle and have 4 horses that look beautiful running in the fields but are no longer ridden.
We work 5 hours a day with 1 day off a week. There is lots of wildlife especially since we reforested part of the farm 20 years ago with 7600 trees.
Nature is amazing! I have seen twin fawns in the hay field and a humming bird nest in my garden. We feed the birds in winter. A Scarlet Cardinal or Blue Jay at the bird feeder, midwinter is a joy.
The house is large with a private apartment for helpers-two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a gym with a flat screen TV, living room with TV, kitchen and patio.
We can host 3 at a time and occasionally have had 5. It is so much more fun when there are guests from different countries. The bedroom with en-suite bathroom is ideally suited to a couple.
You can LOGIN to my WIFI for email. If you need to access more Internet capability the local village store will suit your needs. An all-terrain vehicle, is available to tour the property. We cut 3 acres of grass with a riding lawnmower.
Most of the tasks will be in the gardens and home. Three acres are ornamental gardens and it takes a lot of work to keep them beautiful. Help with fencing and haying is seasonal.
Sometimes we have to bottle-feed new born calves. We will do some painting indoors and out. There is always a project in the works.
My children and grandkids live close by so we may offer to help them as well. Every week we try to find someone in the neighborhood who could use some assistance for a few hours.
Last year was the third year for our Organic Veggie Garden. We learned a lot and I can not wait to improve on this year's successes. We have a 22 foot long greenhouse to start crops and flowers early.
Our helpers cook one meal that is typical of their home country. We want to learn about your culture as well as share our own.
If you like hiking, there is a lovely trail down to the river. The Bruce Trial is close by. Tea or coffee in the morning looking out over the Valley is a joy [occasionally wine or a cold beer as the sun sets].
If photography and computers are of interest to you they are passions of mine. Perhaps we can share knowledge. I love all APPLE products. Our property is a photograph's dream. I teach the occasional photography course here in the garden.
Having taught high school English for many years I am happy to help you improve your language skills.
Our Border Collie dog, Zip, has an energetic disposition. She loves to play with anyone willing to give her some attention. Previous guests have taught her many tricks. She will even give you a HIGH FIVE as a thank you. Thanks to our HelpX guests she how has 24 tricks. Maybe you will teach her the 25th.
We can not host smokers even if you wish to smoke outside. I am allergic to scented products too. There are even certain flowers like Lilies we can no longer grow. Luckily there are lots of others that do not make me feel sick. Imagine a gardener allergic to the scent of some flowers!
Please read the reviews our previous guests have written and the video two of them made and if you think some time on our farm is for you, email me and we can discuss options and timing.
If we have as wonderful young people visit in 2017 as our first three years, I will be a happy gal.
