3 more weeks to go till we close the hostel for the season. Come help us take the tents down and pack everything away. Get warm in the sauna and enjoy the autom estonia has its best - full of berries and mushrooms!
The vision of the hostel is to share an alternative and sustainable happy and vibrant space, where people can relax and enjoy.
Last 4 years me and Jim have gone through an immense journey and pushing many limits to establish our place. We live completely off-grid in Lahemaa National Park and we love it! Surrounded by old growth forest, we have spent our days developing our home and site into an honest example of sustainable 'low impact' living. We believe in using only natural and reclaimed materials when constructing, and have renovated our log cabin home this way. In addition, we have built a straw-bale sauna, an outside kitchen, cordwood chicken shed and finishing up outside showers (3) and new outside compost toilets (4). We have run various events and workshops here and are developing the site in accordance to Permaculture principals.
If you love outdoors living, love getting stuck into a project, love socialising - then you will love it here. Happy people only need apply!!
The main help we require is to do with the hostel. The tasks include welcoming quests and interacting with them, general cleaning (kitchen, chill out tent, sauna, toilets) setting up beds. But we also need on-going help with gardening and general maintenance, lighting up sauna, doing firewood, looking after animals?
We like to be honest and straight talking with everybody, including volunteers, especially in regards to tasks and keeping the place tidy. We are looking for Helpers who are positive, able to communicate (!) and are interested in sustainable ecological living. Sometimes we will not be on site, so we are looking for volunteers who are happy to work and live independently.
You will have your own space in the woods - 4 metre Bell tent shared with other volunteer(s) that will be furnished. For us it is important that volunteers are as happy as quests and ourselves. You are welcome to use sauna every night its lit, use outside kitchen etc.
In summer we have food from the garden and from the forest. This time we provide food from the garden and some basics and ask you to supplement your own food.
The sea and beach is 1km away, loads of walks in the forest, two lakes within 20minutes walk which are amazing for swimming. Plus, the abandoned soviet submarine base in our village which is a must to explore day or night...!! We also plan to run events which you are welcome to join as a helper or as a quest.
As we are located in Lahemaa National Park, there is lush forest with lot of wildlife around. Good opportunity to also do moose/wild board and bird watching. Brown bears are frequent visitors in the village but we haven't seem them yet.
Mari's passion is foraging and she is planning to do foraging in most of the days and you are most welcome to join and learn about edible medicinal plants.
We are all students of magic and let's enjoy the magic of life together.
We have built our own photovoltaic solar panels (and teach others how to during workshops) using factory rejected cells and old double glazing units. The shallow well on site provides pure water for drinking and washing. In addition, we utilise the small stream which runs through the property for washing and bathing at the strawbale sauna wash house. The sauna is an integral part of Estonian culture and we too frequent ours and use it as a common social hub. With an ice cold plunge pool, chill out decking area with hammocks, fire heated bath tub - its a great place to unwind, get clean and sink a beer or fruit juice in the evenings.
Mari has been developing vegetable beds over the past two years which are ripe with produce during summer months. When we first arrived at the site we were involved in the construction of a strawbale greenhouse onsite which is part of our NGO. We are by no means self-sufficient yet, but its a dream we are working towards. In April we are looking for volunteers who would like to help in the garden and to build a fence and maybe a larger chicken coop.
We obviously, use outdoor compost toilets. These are clean and hygienic.
We follow many of the Permaculture principals and infact, Mari is a qualified teacher so will be running and hosting a few weekend courses at ours this spring and summer. We have a cat, a dog and chickens.
We are involved in two non-profit organisations which focus on sustainable development. ThePOOSH.org is a global organisation, similar to helpx, which connects volunteers with sustainable build projects- you may want to check it out also. Our other NGO is more practical based and we teach, facilitate and host workshops in natural & sustainable building. Should we have any scheduled for when you stay you can of course help us out with them and attend for free.
We wont ask you to do anything we wouldn't want to do ourselves and looking to host helpers who can work in a group and / or independently. Its a great space and surrounded by forest so its a pretty magical place to be. Days off will be arranged with the rest of the team. It is important for us to take time off and we would like you to offer the same.
Any questions, just ask.
Peace and Good vibes,
Jim & Mari
