FOR WINTER ENQUIRIES ONLY - THERE IS OFTEN VERY BAD WEATHER IN SCOTLAND IN THE WINTER... COLD/WET/MUDDY/WINDY ETC & LOOKING AFTER ANIMALS IN THIS WEATHER IS VERY TIRING & DIFFICULT....

WE LIKE TO STAY HAPPY :) :) :) & HAVE FUN ...

SO IF YOU THINK YOU MIGHT HAVE PROBLEMS WITH ANIMALS BEING SMELLY, OR THE MUD IN THE FIELDS WHEN IT FLOODS, OR ARE FRIGHTENED OF ANIMALS, OR IF YOU ARE NOT USED TO REALLY A LOT OF HARD EXERCISE &/ WINTER FARMING CONDITIONS, MIGHT WE RESPECTFULLY ASK YOU TO MAKE A BOOKING TO STAY WITH US IN THE SUMMER TIME?

It can also be extremely cold here & whilst we have heating, this is an old house & not a city apartment & what we call a heated home, others may find very cold depending on where you come from !!!

We are just very outdoorsy & active & I suppose intensely on the side of survival lifestyle with a lots of card-playing & drinking thrown in where necessary to have a laugh - a little bit military maybe in an organic way... definitely we are not a place for the fainthearted .. !

ALSO SORRY TO BE SO STRICT, BUT IF YOU ARE SICK PLEASE DO NOT VISIT US, AS WE HAVE TO WORK VERY LONG HOURS IN COLD WEATHER LOOKING AFTER THE ANIMALS & WE HAVE MUCH HARDER WORK THAN YOU, BECAUSE WE GIVE THE VOLUNTEERS THE EASY JOBS, PLEASE DO NOT COME TO US IF YOU ARE SICK !! If you have not disclosed to us a medical reason that very hard work & conditions would be unsuitable for you, we may be unable to accept you once you are here, as it could be a health & safety issue. There are many regulations within farming which we must comply with & you must be mentally & physically fit enough for this challenge. It is silly to lie about your experience or health & then possibly just put yourself & others at risk... this environment is a challenge & we only want people who really enjoy that & make it fun !

Please also be aware that we are not tolerant of any drug use at all. We have personally as a family have supported rehab organisations & do not judge anyone, but will call the police immediately if there is any drug use or violent behaviour. We are also very much a non smoking environment including in any of the outside work spaces & yard area. You are of course welcome to smoke away from the working areas. We are in fact now looking to set up a charity to rescue animals & then work with people who need rescuing who can learn to care for the animals as part of their therapy. It is very important for our insurance that we do not encourage any drugs.

IMPORTANT - FARMING IS DANGEROUS. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU CAN TAKE INSTRUCTION QUICKLY. (As an additional note, we have only had to shout instructions very rarely for people who really were putting themselves, or the animals, or other people in danger ... it is so rare, but you have to know that this is a farming environment & you must do things for the best for everyone - we have not had any accidents & only had one person who got annoyed because he did not wish to follow our instruction - most people here are very positive & happy & can easily follow an emergency instruction & still want to come back. We have even had several cards & letters thanking us for the kindness & time people had here, but we do have to put your safety first & therefore need you to be able to follow clear instructions too !! :) :) :)

So now the story of this place :) we have been mostly organic since 1978 when my family bought the farm. Whilst it is really at the renovation stage now, it is one of the most beautiful & charming old farms in its current state & we are told very welcoming ...

We are obsessed with our animals as friends & have some horses, so can help you get used to horses & trek out if you are able, as trainee volunteer grooms. We cannot teach you to ride, as we are not licensed to do that, but you can learn a lot as a groom which includes learning how to exercise horses for a living. Charlotte is registered as a freelance riding coach, but can only teach people on their own horses. If you wish to base here longterm & gain experience with horses, then we can support you, & you are welcome to bring one well behaved horse as part of that deal, as a working or volunteer groom.

The house is quite old & needs lots of work to modernise it: it is however warm & comfortable & although we are very rural we have a steady bunch of friends who visit from nearby & also from other countries we have been to ourselves.

The area is known as a beauty spot for walking, camping, cycling, trekking & sailing. there is good transport for this area & you can walk to the bus stop in 12 minutes from the house. It takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to travel to Glasgow on the bus or by bus, train & ferry combination & the nearest town is called Dunoon, which has quite a few pubs. Our farm is beside Glenbranter which is part of the National Park.

We have a lot of work on the farm, so do not really go out much ourselves, but can advise you as to where is fun & so on. please ask any questions & we will try to help out as best as we can ! it is very quiet here if you are used to busy city life, so make sure you really want to be in a gentle country place before you travel to this farm :) There are not many pubs etc.

We also have volunteers for a short or a longterm stay, as we have a wide variety of work here from gardening to maintenance to restoration, creative projects & the ongoing care of our lovely animals & environment...

We are happy either to offer you one type of work or you can try learning different skills by helping with each of the areas as mentioned. We have had overseas students/volunteers to stay with us as a family going back over 20 years in the different countries that we have lived in, & also have travelled ourselves & volunteered too.

Whilst we joke lots & talk slang in normal speech like most people do, our actual standard of english for business is excellent and can really help advise you regarding the specifics of usage for business or higher level education.

Further info - there are tons of photos on facebook so can share if you contact us & will happily skype & chat to answer your questions too :)
