We only are interested in serious people who DO NOT ROMANTICIZE life in the wilderness. Living in the wilderness is tough and asks really something from people who want to live here.
We, Paul and Maya, we moved from the Netherlands to the last wilderness in the forest mountains of Swedish Lappland. Here we live together with our Siberian Huskies and Japanese Spitz. In Mörtberg it is winter from October till the end of April, sometimes we still have snow during the end of May.
From mid May till mid August we have about 24 hours daylight. In winter, during the shortest day we have about 4 hours daylight.
HelpXers who want to come to help us, go back to basic life. Here you cannot find internet access, nor television, nor warm showers and no public transportation. When HelpXers arrive by train or bus, we pick them up from the railway station in Murjek. We live far away from the civilised world in the beautiful wilderness of Swedish Lappland, however no luxury can be expected here, it is a very remote place and please do not underestimate that.
We live in the middle of nature and we intend to live as good as possible from the nature. Our house is heated with fire-wood that we have to cut ourselves. We pick a lot of berries, wild herbs and mushrooms in summer and autumn. We have good fishing possibilities around us in summer and in winter. We have a berry- and vegetable garden. And of course we see to it that we do not spoil nature.
For HelpXers that want to go out in the nature, it might be possible to spot a bear, a lynx, a fox, and sometimes even a wolf, a beaver, moose, reindeer, otters and a great variety of birds etc. However when our HelpXers prefer to spend their days off by just sitting inside the house, then you won't see much of the wildlife around us. Although we have no television, we have Animal Planet life here on Mörtberg.
During wintertime we have a lot of snow and it also can be as cold as minus 40 degrees. This means that living here can be very isolated. And this also means that during winter we have no jobs that can be done by HelpXers.
All jobs need to be done in summer and as our summers are really short, we have to work hard during summertime.
Each year priority number 1 is getting enough firewood for the next winter.
Apart from that, we have to repair fences, work in de huge garden, some building and reparation work etc.
On Mörtberg, like everywhere in the wildernss we follow the principle: WE USE WHAT WE HAVE. When living far away from the shops, this is a very important principle, otherwise it will be very difficult to live here.
In case you take the challenge and want to live in the silence and beauty of nature, in exchange for the work that HelpXers do for us, we offer you a bed in a "skogskoja" and three meals per day.
If you are prepared to work hard, you can have a real good time here. We expect you to work 4 days per week from 8 hours each. 3 Free days per week. You also need to have an international health insurance, from which we ask you to give us a copy on arrival, as well as a copy from your passport.
You also should have YOUR OWN WARM SLEEPING BAG, because this is polar circle land. During August and September it is quite normal to have minus degrees during the nights.
We are looking for trustworthy people who love nature and animals and are non-smokers.
IT IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN TO HARM THE WILD ANIMALS AROUND US.
For the HelpXers that want to hike around in the area, there are several places to walk to and stay overnight in a lovely cabin situated next to a lake: Fioltjärn about 5 to 6 km away from us.
Stuorajaur about 8 to 9 km away from Mörtberg.
For the die hards there is a 100 km walk to the Magical Polar Cirkle: Day 1. you can stay overnight in one of the cabins on this Polar Circle, day 2 you can stay overnight in Ekorrbo in Pålkem (an old home for kids without mother) and day three you arrive back in Mörtberg.
For the experienced hiker, there is a track next to the Råne river, it has several cabins where one can stay overnight.
Furthermore we live about 200 km away from the World Heritage Lapponia that contains about 3 National Parks. It is also possible to hike there.
For people who love nature, it is absolutely marvelous here in Swedish Lappland.
We are looking forward to meeting you.
