This old estate is located on beautiful Valentia Island of the South West coast of Kerry. It was home to several generations of Knights of Kerry. Today there is a historic B&B in the old manor house, 4 self catering holiday homes, a mature sub tropical garden, heritage woodlands, a walled garden and a working farm, all for visitors to wander about. It's 10 minutes walk to the lighthouse, 3 minutes to the beach. There are ancient healing energy points on the grounds, dating back to druid times and many ancient sites nearby, like the UNESCO World Heritage site Skellig Rock. We - Jessica and Eoin and our 2 Kids (6 and 4 years old) have taken over from Jessica's mum. The whole estate is in need of a tidy-up and a face lift. It is a very exciting time and if you would like to be part of a team making Glanleam shine and glow again then we would love to have you with us. The list of work to be done is endless, there is work to be done in the garden and woodlands, clearing, maintenance, organic vegetable gardening. We need help getting the holiday houses and the main House B&B ready for the season including painting and handyman and even skilled work. We also need help during the season with the above and also welcoming garden visitors. Eoin needs help with the sheep and other animals (3 Connemara ponies, 2 dogs and a puppy on the way, 24 laying hens, 4 geese, 2 donkeys, 1 cat called run-a-away) and work on the land like repairing stone walls. At times we will need help with looking after the kids. At present we are also redoing and expanding our kids adventure trail through the grounds and gardens, including building fairy houses, pirates trail, treasure maps etc.Whatever your skill, interest or ability, we have something for you. Please do note, that we all work hard here and expect same from you while you are here. Thank you for your understanding.
The next village, Knightstown, and its shop and two pubs are about 1 1/2 miles from the estate. The ferry to the mainland also departs from there. It usually operates from end of March to mid October and runs about every 15 minutes. Also there is a bridge connecting Valentia to the mainland, located at the opposite side of the island. Valentia is very different in the season/summer compared to the winter. Weatherwise the summers can be absolutely fabulous and the winters wet and windy with rain constantly coming from the side - can be. We have also had moist summers and nice and dry winters. During the season there is a lovely buzz; and it is bissfully quiet during the winter, some might find it too quiet. Please also keep in mind, that the bus service around Kerry is not as frequent in the off season.
Accommodation is in a separate house in the farmyard or in the hay loft. In the off season we also could accommodate you in the main house with us. All food is provided for.
There is WiFi, but no TV reception. Radio reception is poor, too.
This is the most wonderful place and once you're here you can't help but fall in love with it! We look forward to welcoming you here!
