Opportunity for long-term and short-term stay
Our farm is in Mid-Sweden, next to the beautiful river Klarälven.
A beaver resides next to us and elks are regular visitors.
It is in Northern Värmland, a small village called Höljes, 30km south of the border to Norway and 100 km north of Torsby.
We want to revive our little farm, as simple and ecologically sound as possible. We try to find reasonable ways of combining handwork and modern methods to do our work.
We do not like the modern style of wasting, we like to recycle and restore. Even when this is hard work.
A lot of work needs to be done, usually the work is hard, dirty and not as romantic as some people might imagine it ;)
But it is rewarding to be out and to be active and you have great spare time possibilities!
We do not offer paid jobs, it is not possible to get employed at our place!
Before you apply: Please!
Read the whole profile!
Check on the map where we are and make sure you could find a way how to get here!
Check our calendar!
The work is ususally not mon-fri, but flexible – depending on tasks and weather and so on.
Please note: Tasks need to be done no matter if it is raining / hot / mosquitoes are flying / snowing / blowing ...
daily care for a few chickens and some horses (take care to feed them, clean away their shit, and so on), repair and renovate an old farmhouse, clearing and cultivating of grassland and forest, handling of building materials, built horse and sheep fences, set up and maintain an eco herb and vegetable garden, cleaning and painting, make firewood, make food for the animals, pick berries, make hay ...and so on.
If you have good experiences in riding islandic horses (not the "traditional" way!), in academic riding or similar: we need help with training of our islandic horse to improve her gait.
Please note: yes we have a handful of horses BUT the work is not about brushing and petting them, the work is mostly FOR the horses ->hay, fences, cutting trees for new grassland and so on
No experience with animals is needed but you must not be afraid of them and you must be willing to learn how to take care for them!
Sometimes we work together, sometimes you will work by yourself. You will always get instructions what to do and how.
Therefore it it absolutely neccessary that you can read, understand and speak english!
We invite people who appreciate a simple, basic lifestyle, who like the calm and beautiful nature and want to do practical work and who like animals and are interested to get in touch with them.
Please consider that you might meet other helpers but it is also possible that you are the only one and are "alone" - which is a really good thing here in this nice area -but some people cannot handle that!
We have space for 1-4 people.
We have to do a lot of other work too, so helpers have to be able to work on their own in a responsible way!
No smoking / no drugs!
Minimum age is 18. And you should have at least a little experience in doing practical work (e.g. how to hold a brush :)
Due to bad experiences we take a deposit of SEK 500 or EUR 50 to motivate people to act responsible. So far, it seems to help.
Don’t bring your best clothes.
Sturdy! shoes (and a second pair because getting wet feet is not unusual), old clothes for all weather conditions are important, also a headlamp! and a warm! sleeping bag.
We speak english, swedish and german.
We love nature, a simple lifestyle and most of all: getting things done. We work very hard ourselves and we expect you to really get into the projects that we have going on.
We have been volunteering ourselves for some years. Not for cheap holiday possibilities but to help the hosts with whatever they needed. We still have this attitude – if you do not have it, please apply somewhere else!
ACCOMODATION & FOOD
Close to nature you camp next to the river, where we have a compost-toilet, a small solar shower, a fire place & a huge tent with a wood fired stove and a kitchen trailer. This means you can bath in the river or use the outdoor shower. Be prepared that the air gets moist even inside the tent when it is raining for too long.
Everything is outdoors, no matter if it is sunny or rainy.
Water comes from the rivers and electricity from the sun. (Yes, you can charge your mobile phone or other small devices, no you cannot use a hair dryer.)
You can use the washing machine once a week.
In wintertime we provide basic indoor accomodation with hot shower, toilet, wood fired heating.
We have a few happy chickens that give you the best eggs in the world. You can pick berries and mushrooms in the forest, catch fish in the river. We have a small vegetable garden and potatoe field. We make our own bread. If we get the chance we buy local meat. We buy food mostly at our local store, this means there is not so much variety, because the store is small. We also buy canned vegetables and so on, due to the difficult storing conditions.
Helpers prepare the food for themselves. We provide basic food and cooking instructions.
Cooking and cleaning do not count as working time.
SPARE TIME ACITIVIES
You can use a wood-fired sauna and the swedish badtunna (outdoor hot pot - very nice!). You can take the rowing boat, go fishing, walk in the beautiful surrounding (several very nice walking pathes invite hikers), go swimming, take part in horse activities sometimes (This is not only for girls, we had grown up guys who became horse fans!!!)
In the neighbourhood you also find activities that cost a bit but are worth trying once you are here: learn how to catch fish, snowmobile tours, more horse riding, ice skating, swimming hall, Branäs alpin area for downhill skiing, snowboarding, sledge dog tours
Sometimes we have availabilities in wintertime. Main tasks are: take care for the animals (hay, water, shit), clean away (a lot of) snow. And other tasks if required - all OUTDOORS.
Winter here can be very hard: up to minus 35 degrees and a lot of snow, sometimes around 0 and rainrainrain and ice everywhere. If you want to come in wintertime, consider this. Also that you need a lot of good clothing (warm boots, gloves, jacket, pants, spare stuff for when everything else is wet, and so on).
BY APPLYING TO OUR PLACE YOU UNDERSTAND AND ACCEPT THE FOLLOWING:
You are fully responsible for what you are doing or not doing.
Concerning tools and other items this means, that if you break anything, damage it, loose it – no matter if this happens while you are helping or in your spare time - you have to repair it properly or replace it. If this is not possible, you have to pay for repair or purchase of a new item plus the extra expenses this causes.
The period, in which this has to happen, depends on how urgently the item is needed.
You have to take care for your own health-/accident-/3rd party liability- and so on insurances.
You have to care for your tax and social insurance matters by yourself (and find out if this applies for you).
The place where you are staying and things that you use have to be clean and tidy, during your stay and esp. when you leave.
When using items, tools and so on never leave them lying around. Always put them back in their own place!
+++Hallo people from France! Many of you need a 6 week internship for your studies. In general you are welcome here BUT please make sure that we really offer what you need. In most cases we do not, because we do not "produce animals" and everything we do is small scale. So please reread the profile before you apply!+++
