****WE ARE LOOKING FOR A BUILDER OR SOMEONE WITH REASONABLE BUILDING EXPERIENCE FROM NOVEMBER TO HELP BUILD OUR STEEL KIT HOME AT OUR NEW 6.5 ACRE BLOCK.*******
YOU WOULD STILL BE STAYING IN OUR CARAVAN - THE NEW BLOCK ISN'T TOO FAR AWAY. IDEALLY YOU WOULD BE WILLING WORK 3 FULL DAYS A WEEK, RATHER THAN HALF DAYS.
We have just built a shelter over our caravan, it is much cooler and it is now much better protected from rainfall. Hooray!
School is back on again and as much of my day is spent home-schooling our kids during school term,I would love some help with domestic jobs:
- sweeping the floor, washing the dishes, window cleaning, dusting, making bread and biccies (i can teach you - out method is very easy!!!)hanging out laundry etc.. OF COURSE you are welcome to do farm jobs too but I will have limited time to show you jobs - you will need to be a self-motivator and quick learner!!
***all helpers are expected to do one round of washing dishes each day! If our 6 and 10 year old children can help out, so can you!***
Farm jobs at the moment include weeding, mowing, mulching, gate oiling, harvesting, snail hunting (! - serious!!!)feeding ducks and chooks, cleaning poultry houses...If you are competent working outside and want something more challenging, this could be discussed.
If you have an interest in Primary Education, I would welcome assistance with teaching. Other than this, we don't really need 'child-minding' except perhaps for a short amount of time each day.
on wet days, the choice is yours - you can do house cleaning or work in the rain!
Kirsten knows a very small amount of Mandarin/ Chinese - lived in China for 9 months. Basic conversation possible with the help of a dictionary!!
We live in the beautiful rolling hills of the Atherton Tablelands between the townships of Millaa Millaa (10mins) and Ravenshoe (15mins) approximately 2 hours from Cairns. The landscape is primarily rainforest and dairy cow farming properties.
Helpers can be picked up from Atherton (30mins), Ravenshoe or Malanda (25mins) or other near-by hosts on the southern Tablelands. (we can help with bus timetables from Cairns). There is no public transport servicing our road. Honest and genuine persons are welcome to join us on outings to nearby places of interest and enjoy new experiences. Sometimes if our 3year old is too cranky(!), we can drop you off for a half day or so at nearby places of interest so you can have fun in peace!! We are very fond of picnics, trips to the local markets, waterfalls/swimming holes, exploring new places and enjoying our beautiful environment. We are out and about quite often during the week, so plenty of chances to drop in to the shops or just for a change of scenery!
Our property is based loosely on permaculture principles. We have a very large vegetable and fruit garden which we rely upon for almost all vegetables for our family of 5. Fruit production is pretty good now too! In addition we have a large number of ducks and chickens some of which provide meat and eggs for our table. Milk is supplied by our lovely goats, Jesse and Leela and entertainment is kindly provided by our 3 children, 4 cats and a dog!!
Jobs may include, child minding, mowing, cleaning, animal care, gardening (mulching, weeding, harvesting, digging, planting),painting, helping with preserving surplus food, and other jobs which arise on a day to day basis. If you like to eat homemade bread, you will also become a legendary bread baker! ..and perhaps a cheese-maker too!
let us know what you are most comfortable doing...and we will try to make it work!
We are trying to be a more musical family - so musical people are very welcome! Our son loves the harmonica and has been learning recorder for some time. In addition my son and myself (Kirsten) recently started to learn the violin - so you might need ear plugs!!!!!!!! Ben plays some guitar...ear plugs not required for this!
ACCOMODATION: small caravan with solar light. comfy and clean. Toilet and bathroom shared.
No shower, just a bath - great for a soak after a long day! On a hot day we can set up an outdoor shower or bath....the other option is the sprinkler!!!
a big smile, lots of questions to ask and stories to tell, patience with children!...and hat and working clothes too...If you don't have working clothes we can visit the local second hand shop...
WE CAN OFFER: a family environment, outings, plenty of food and hopefully (!) a great experience and a sense of satisfaction as you help us achieve our self-sustainable goals and become a part of our story.
please, if you agree to be a helper, try not to look shocked when it is time to do some work...this agreement is mutual and it makes me feel terrible to ask people to help out when they are totally un-enthusiastic about this arrangement. We try to listen to job preferences and will try to offer a variety of work. With the wrong attitude the work may be dull, but if you approach your tasks with a smile and a positive attitude you WILL have FUN and you WILL learn heaps!
Please be open and honest about your interests and abilities - this helps us to say whether our place is suitable for you and also to enhance your farm experience.
Our house, vege garden, composting toilet, interior of caravan, goats.
