This farm is a donkey depot for our walking safari business. Safaris and treks are supported by teams of pack donkeys to carry food, camp furniture and baggage. Safaris and treks can be one day or extended to as long as 28 days but normally 3-8 days.
The farm is located in the hamlet of Kalunga about 10km south of the historic mining town of Herberton. Herberton is about 20km south of the agricultural centre and the rich farming region of the Atherton Tablelands.
There are up to 30 donkeys agisted on the farm including old recued donkeys, retired donkeys, two jacks and 10 jenny as well as the working team of 14 donkeys.
Assistance tasks could include:
- farm maintenance such as fencing, mowing, weeding,
- donkey care, feeding hay checking water troughs,
- safari support: assistance guides, pack donkey driving,
- marketing: photography, website development and revision,
- vehicle maintenance.
Accommodation is a self contained three bedroom "house" incorporating a large shed. There is a galley kitchen, TV and mobile phone (Telstra) reception.
There are opportunities to see platypus, tree kangaroos as the farm is about 10km from high altitude rainforest to the east. Our farm is in dry country open forest with three species of resident wallabies, bettongs and other wildlife including a bird list of about 125 species.
