We've lived overseas for many years, including time in South America, Asia and the Middle East, and returned six years ago to start our 'off grid adventure'. Having 'internationalized' it's been time to put some roots down (literally) in a sustainable, creative and co-evolutionary way. These days we're a family of four (kids aged 2 and 5) and a friendly dog. We speak some Spanish and a little Japanese and would receive foreigners eagerly (also fellow NZers of course). We're one hour's drive from the nearest towns (Kaitaia and Kerikeri) although a small organic co-op is twenty-five minutes away. Neighbours include a Bee-Keeper and his family, artists, potters and homesteaders, some of whom are open to receiving helpers who may wish to spend more time in the area.
People wishing to learn about setting up off-grid so that they can do so themselves would be able to pick up valuable skills at our place. Because we are still building our home, accommodation and facilities are limited. Helpers stay in either a fifteen by eight foot caravan or a two room canvas tent (tent isn't used in winter). This may change in the future. We are interested in the idea of exchange, not just in a work for food and accommodation sense, but also in terms of ideas, goodwill, conversation and general bonhomie.
Beach and surf-lovers should note we are about an hour's drive from some truly stunning coastlines.

Tasks we need help with include building off-grid, gardening, looking after fruit trees, chickens and generally doing what needs to be done for an off-grid existence (firewood chopping, track maintenance etc). Located in a stunning native forest which includes mature Kauri trees, a stay at our place would particularly suit those who love being immersed in nature. We drink from the stream, eat from the garden and relax in the deep forest silence (once the children have gone to sleep...) As well as organic cultivation, other essential skills, such as earth building, alternative power utilization, carpentry, water and irrigation installation can be gleaned. Longer stays preferred. Tent/caravan accom, composting toilet.
At the moment, we're finishing the interior of our new room, restoring a cast iron bath tub, preparing summer gardens, weeding garlic beds and building an outdoor courtyard.
