We are seeking passionate adventurers to spend mid-October to the end of November 2017 or from February onwards (December and January are sorted) on Inishbofin island off Glaway's western coast - on the edge of the Wild Atlantic Way. Although the weather can be exciting and dramatic on Inishbofin in Winter, any indoor time will be matched by fine winter days when Inishbofin's stunning beauty can be explored. The island is designated a place of outstanding natural beauty, a special area of conservation and is known for its Irish music tradition. WE ARE ALSO SEEKING ENQUIRIES FOR HELPERS DURING ALL OF 2018.

INISHBOFIN has a twice daily Winter ferry service connecting it to the mainland, a resident public health nurse, a national school, a shop, a community centre and a pub/B&B, all open all Winter long.
Lacey's Farm is a project in development and those who volunteer will be helping to contribute along the road to the development on the island of a centre whose activities will include becoming a resource focused on providing education in sustainable living, renewable technologies, food production in harmony with nature and permaculture.
Since commencing the project in 2011, we (Anthony and Julia) have transformed Lacey's Farm and have created beautiful and productive gardens there. We have supplied the tourist market and some local hotels with fresh organically grown garden produce from the gardens. Although we are not registered as organic, we only use organic methods of vegetable production.
We have had our most successful year of development so far in 2017 with a string of energetic and enthusiastic helpers who came to stay on the farm.
Now we want to lay down the foundations for future advancement of the project which could involve cottage repair and renovation to garden maintenance - depending on the skillset of any helpers. Because we mostly do not live on the island in the winter and we are looking for two people or a family to come to mind our beautifully located farm for the winter and this placing may appeal to adventurous people who would like to settle in this little Wild Atlantic Way gem for the Autumn or Spring.
We are offering accommodation, the garden's bounty and a small stipend for time spent engaged in Farm work but also the opportunity to earn extra money cleaning a cottage when this can be let to visitors.
Lacey's farm is a spectacular 2.5 hectare holding on the gently south sloping land overlooking the harbour of the beautiful island of Inishbofin off the Connemara coast – one of the most Westerly places in Europe.
We are developing a beautiful market garden/visitor attraction catering mainly for summer tourists but also for locals Our long-term aim is to develop a permaculture and sustainability centre – for which we already have permission.
Much has already been achieved this year in the development of the beautiful gardens and Winter helpers will be maintaining the gardens and polytunnel, undertaking Autumn and Winter plantings and collecting seaweed to nurture the land.
Since 2011, we have been developing the gardens and accommodation. The lands now include a vegetable garden, a root crop field (where Summer helpers' accommodation - a beautiful caravan with stunning views over the farm and harbour - is located), a polytunnel, the walled garden and a herb garden (planned with seating and also having beautiful views of the comings and goings of the island's harbour). The vegetable garden has been in operation since 2012 and the root crop field since 2014. The other elements were commissioned this Summer and the continuing upgrading of these are our development projects for 2017/18.
We have also constructed a new kitchen to process the garden bounty and a shower/toilet/wash house for use by helpers and visitors alike. We invite enquiries for helpers from October 2017 onwards.
Anthony grows the vegetables and Julia has developed some fantastic jams, chutneys, hummus, cordials and other products made from the garden bounty. We sell these items and our fresh veg (plus some stunning Italian organic olive oil and fairtrade/organic coffee) from the farm and at the weekly Summer market. We are looking for practical helpers with good skills for working in the garden and doing house maintenance.
The use of a vehicle for use by the right persons in the Winter months may also be possible

Ideal candidates will be focused and organized self starters, be able to turn their hand to most jobs and will have a love of nature and the outdoors. References from some sources are preferred but we may accept non-helpx references if they are appropriate.

Inishbofin is a spectacularly beautiful island served by a twice daily ferry in Autumn and Winter. It has a very strong Irish music tradition, several national loop walks, three sandy beaches, many rugged cliffs, a long history and much archaeology. It has a shop (100m from the farm), a post office, a pub, three hotels (open from Easter to September), a café, a beautiful hostel and an excellent broadband service.
There is a large community centre within 100m where there is a library, an internet cafe, a large hall (where indoor soccer and badminton can be played), a creche and exhibition space. The farm is located in a stunning position overlooking the island's harbour.
