-We are now full for the summer and can't take more volunteers-Our names are Susana and Mayatte, we are friendly and fun and love to work, eat and relax together. We came here to be close to our friends who live nearby and through our love for meditation and we have just started a market garden in the mountain area of the Serra Estrella in central Portugal next to a beautiful river. We are the first people to move to the land and we live in a tree house on the river edge, everything is back to basics and very refreshing after many years in the big city. We are inspired to live here to start the garden project that will be the heart of a new eco-village starting here soon. Facilities for volunteers are campfire cooking, camping by the river, hot solar showers, washing clothes by hand, compost toilets and relaxing whilst listening to the birds and river flow by. There is also swimming in the river to cool down in the hot afternoons. Please bring your own tent or we can provide one, sleeping bag etc. In colder months we'll provide you with a small wooden hut with a wood burner to sleep. We eat and work together with volunteers and we expect 6 hours a day, 5 days a week and although gardening is hard work we try our best to work together as much as possible to make it more enjoyable. There are many tasks from weeding, hoeing, planting, watering, sowing seeds, making compost and transplanting etc. In the summer months there may be opportunities to help picking berries and dehydrating various vegetables. In hot weather we start early to avoid working in the heat. We can take about 1 or 2 volunteers for most of the year but sometimes more may be possible. We have prepared about 1000m2 of garden so far and will increase the size up to about 5000m2 within 1 year. There are about 3 hectares of cherries and berries planted in the last few years. We combine permaculture principles within a commercial system and we'll be selling vegetables and salad to a vegetarian cafe, the local markets and courses or retreats that will happen here as part of a new eco-village project that is just beginning. We would like to welcome everyone here if you are inspired about growing vegetables and motivated to work in the garden and are happy to live basically. The food is vegan, non processed, sugar free and sattvik which is a yogic diet free of onions, garlic, mushrooms etc. It's mainly just vegetables and salad from the garden, rice, home made flat bread, porridge or simple muesli etc as we have a very small budget for food. Autumn is great for grape foraging and in summer we make ice cream from frozen berries and bananas sometimes. The local shops, bus stop and post office are 5kms away in the local village. There is no wifi or internet here, you'll have to go somewhere in the local village. Meditation, kiirtan or devotional mantra singing, asana postures and karma yoga are all integral to the eco village and we are inspired to teach and practice together with volunteers. If you have your own practices feel free to share. Most people speak both Portuguese or some Portuguese, English and Spanish. We look forward to hearing from you!
