** update May 2017 - we basically now have all the help arranged that we need for this year. We are only able to accommodate additional volunteers who are happy to camp and either speak Portuguese or who are skilled in construction. Thank you :) **

We are Pete and Anna, from the UK originally but we are living now on Ilha das Flores in Açores. We bought a small house and ruin in September 2016 with some land and we will build our house from the ruin and make a permaculture garden on our land to grow food for our family and guests.

We are just beginning in our project and there is lots of work to do! We have plenty of different building and gardening tasks to do and lots of projects we would like to plan and begin. It is the first time we have done work like this for ourselves so also we are learning a lot every day!

Our place is in the village of Lomba on Ilha das Flores, which is in the western group of the Azores archipelago. The island is called the island of flowers and for good reason! It is a small and very beautiful island full of nature in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. In the village we have a couple of bars with free Wi-Fi and a bakery. There is a bus to both of the towns on the island from here twice a day where you can go to the supermarket and bars. There is lots of hiking and camping to do on the island - if you love nature this is a great place to be!

We like to cook and eat together with our volunteers at mealtimes, everybody can contribute something to a meal even if it is only conversation or washing the pot. We don't use chemicals on our land, we compost our humanure.

We are just beginning our project so we are still in the very early stages. We are currently planning our permaculture garden and starting to make some small gardens for food. We have chickens, rabbits and 2 dogs.

Right now (spring 2016) the tasks we are doing are finishing our rabbit enclosures, veggie gardening, planting trees, designing our house, looking after our animals, installing solar panels, making a greenhouse & a shed.

For the rest of 2017 our plans include to expand the vegetable gardens, build a kiln, build an outdoor bathroom inside a small ruin, get sheep, stabilise an eroding bank, do the groundworks and drainage for our new house, build furniture and lots more!

If you have lots of good ideas we could really use your help!

We have only a small house with 2 rooms. You can sleep our workshop where there is a rocket mass heater for when it is cold, in the main room of the house or you can camp. You will need to bring your own bedding.

Right now we don't have electricity, but we hope to install solar panels very soon. We have a shower which you can heat water for.

We are very happy to share our knowledge about permaculture and eco-building with you! Also if you want to improve your English language we can help you with this. We would love to practice our Portuguese too if you speak this language.

People of all skill levels are welcome to come and if you have new things you want to try you can come and try them here!
