We are now accepting volunteers for 2018!
We have space for 1-2 volunteers in June onward and prefer stays of at least 3 weeks. We may be full in July, but do inquire.
We are a lovely heritage farmstead on the eco-marvellous Bruce Peninsula. 7 acre property includes small barn, wonderful old apple trees, large gardens and Wellness Studio. After 5 years of running a great little local foods cafe, in 2013 we began transitioning to other ways of utilizing our harvest. Our primary emphasis is now on herbs and you will have ample opportunity to learn about growing, wildcrafting, harvesting and using herbs for food, medicine, personal and home care. We grow and harvest over 80 varieties of herbs throughout the growing season. We have a small and expanding herd of goats ( mostly Kiko) and Icelandic sheep, and often flocks of various poultry.
Please contact us if you are interested in helping with our gardens (primarily medicinal and culinary herbs plus mixed vegetable), goats, ducks & projects.
Morning and evening animal care and interaction with the goats, sheep and our flock of heritage ducks are year round activities.
You are invited to come join us at our small holding with vegetable, herb & perennial gardens, as well as fruit trees.
We are in the process of repairing, reclaiming & renovating the gardens & fruit trees, as they had been somewhat neglected when we arrived. Gardening, maintenance, repair & building help all appreciated. There will be an emphasis on some barn repair and stabilization this year. We enjoy marvellous meals at home and can happily feed omnivores & vegetarians.
Helpers take a fair share of routine household tasks (including meal prep and clean up) in addition to work hours.
Fabulous area for swimming, hiking, music, & recreation.
Wellness activities available on site & in abundance locally. Lovely rock labyrinth in the garden.
Outdoor hot tub is a pleasant place to relax after a good day's work!
We are now a 3 generation household and have been host to helpers from many different parts of the world. My adult son and his family live nearby and participate on the farm; he is the lead for the goat project and related building/fencing. Cheese making & yogourt making will be two of the ways we use some of the goats milk.
***We prefer volunteers who are toward the MATURE & SELF SUFFICIENT side of things: some gardening experience is an asset but not required.
Spring focus is on preparing the gardens (often including new beds), seed starting, caring for transplants, and planting seedlings and seeds into the garden. Caring for newborn kids and lambs and brooding ducklings. Milking starts and goes through to fall.
Herb harvesting & processing begins in late spring early summer, and goes on through the rest of the season. We will also be making medicines ( tinctures, salves, cough syrups etc), skin care products, tea blends and more through the year.
Summer activities include cultivating, weeding, harvesting, tending, succession planting, moving the paddock for the animals for fresh rotational grazing, etc.
Fall focuses on harvesting, canning, cider making & winter preparation, including firewood and preparing winter quarters for the animals.
Property building, maintenance and development processes including keeping the trail network and labyrinth maintained are ongoing through spring summer and fall.
Winter helpers are welcome, focusing on outbuilding projects, seed starting, firewood, & renovation projects, herbal product making, and animal care. Animals now need hay/grain/other feeds as they are in their winter paddocks without access to grazing.
We are gay friendly and otherwise inclusive. We are happy to help you improve your fluency with English, but **you need to have very good functional English and already be able to understand instructions and be part of a conversation**.
