We welcome volunteers again next year (2018) from March

ESPECIALLY WELCOME: ANYONE GOOD WITH TRANSFORMING WOOD PALLETS INTO SOMETHING USEFUL! We have a large stack of pallets & would greatly appreciate help turning these into troughs for plants/vegetables, &/or fences.

We are an independent, not-for-profit hostel in a picturesque, historic town called Inveraray. Inveraray is in the southern highlands of Scotland, on the shore of Loch Fyne - Scotland's longest sea loch - close to the Arrochar Alps and Loch Lomond. It's home to several worthwhile attractions, including a castle, and there are several local woodland walks where you've a good chance of spotting Scottish wildlife. The town boasts lovely cafes, restaurants and very good pubs with live music at the weekend, a chippy, a decent supermarket, a whisky shop and convenient transport connections for Oban, Glasgow and Argyll. Nearby is an excellent craft brewery, an activity centre for horse riding or paintballing, several beautiful gardens, and an interesting power station built inside a mountain.

We would like to meet resourceful, creative people who have an interest in gardening or painting or crafts to help us turn the hostel grounds into a beautiful place for humans and wildlife. You will be given a room of your own in the hostel (or sharing with your friend/partner), where you'll share bathroom and kitchen facilities with our guests. We can you provide you with a good, vegetarian/vegan breakfast each morning, but we can't promise any other meals. Please come prepared to provide for yourself. We ask for only a couple of hours work a day (v. flexible), when weather permits. You will have plenty of free time - please come with some idea of the area & what you'd like to do as we really don't want volunteers sitting about the hostel all day without any interest in exploring where they are!

Please understand that we must also run the hostel so won't be able to accompany or entertain you as often as we'd like. You will need to be quite independent & happy to be explore on your own. When we can, we'll be delighted to help you see Inveraray and surrounds, but we can't promise anything.

We've many ideas & ambitious plans for the garden but very little money, time & only two pairs of hands! We really need your help! What you'll do when you're here depends on what currently needs doing, what your interests/skills are, what materials & tools we have to hand, and - of course - the weather! Here's a wee list of things that will likely need doing, along with the things we'd love to do:

Digging out & transplanting iris, crocosmia, hostas & other plants
Making a herb trough from old bricks
Making troughs from pallets
Making a wattle fence from branches/twigs
Creating flower beds ready for next year
Planting spring-flowering bulbs
Designing a rock garden
Possibly making raised vegetable beds from pallets
Edging, digging, weeding

You are NOT required to work in the hostel/help with the daily running of the hostel.

Please come prepared to get dirty - you will be working outside, often in the mud. Bring waterproofs & old clothes, & appropriate footwear.
