We are a couple running a small business manufacturing livestock equipment. We own close to an acre of property on the edge of Hanna, Alberta; a small, laid-back prairie town. Our home, shop, and separate accommodation house are all located on the property. We are looking for help in our shop, and upkeep with our property. We can offer meals and accommodation in exchange for a few hours of work/day. While working for us, you’ll meet the colourful characters that reside in this rural area.
Duties that we are looking for help with:
- Shop related tasks (welding, painting, assembling)
- Property upkeep (pruning/cutting trees, grass mowing, chemical-free gardening of vegetables and berries, roofing)
- Help in our home (canning, jarring, and preserving, cutting firewood, cooking)
*Duties performed can suit your capability and interests*
Local Adventures and Activites:
- Hiking, canoeing, & kayaking in the Badlands
- Petroglyph and ancient artifact tours
- Chuckwagon and cowboy cooking
- Bison herd tours
- Local museums in surrounding towns
- Medicinal plant and herbal remedy tour
- Astronomy (Star-gazing is great all year round)
- Many beautiful photographic opportunities
- Fitness centre, gym, swimming pool (in summer months)
- Bike riding
- Yoga classes
We also have an extensive library that you are welcome to explore, as well as a piano!
Accommodations and Meals:
You would have your own separate, small house to stay in on our property. Washer/dryer, small kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, & Wi-fi. We can supply all the food and ingredients for meals. It can be negotiable as to who does the cooking. Any other specific foods that you’d prefer can be purchased at the local grocery store.
Hanna is a quaint little town located 200 km Northeast of Calgary. We live on the outskirts of town, across the road from an over 100-year-old Historic Railroad Roundhouse! You can expect the howling of coyotes in the evening, Canadian geese and ducks calling, and beautiful starlit nights with constellations galore. If you come in May, you may witness the rare mating ritual of the Grebes. Wildflowers are abound in summer, and beautiful autumn colours decorate the valleys in the fall. Our powerful prairie thunder and lightning storms are really something to be experienced. We look forward to hearing from you. We can be reached by email.
The first picture is of a chuck wagon cooking event. We try to replicate the way cooking was done on cattle drives mostly using dutch ovens.
The second picture is of our raised bed gardens. We plan to do more of them this year.
The third picture is of kayaking on a creek over around the Red Deer river valley.
The fourth picture is of Dianne and I , our yard is a bit of a jungle but it has a lot of potential.
The Fifth picture is our house from across the road.
The sixth picture is showing how much organizing my shop needs.
