Special Event: Permaculture Design Certificate Course @The Rainbow Sustainability Commons

When: 22 September-5 October 2013

Where: KwaZulu Natal Midlands, South Africa. The Rainbow Sustainability Commons--a demonstration of permaculture techniques and many appropriate technologies. We are located at the base of a mountain from which pours many waterfalls—it is a place where the land calls the spirit home, where wild animals roam, where the seasons colour the landscape gold and green, where the abundance of nature is seen.

What: Permaculture encompasses the ethics of Earth Care (helping nature so that nature helps us), People Care (participatory and democratic processes) & Fair Share (using resources wisely ensuring a sustainable future).

Why: To learn about permaculture design systems, water harvesting & storage, holistic land management, waste and resource use, community economics, alternative/sustainable energy, organic food growing, food forests, appropriate sanitation, natural building, and more... And, to receive an internationally recognized PDC certificate.

Facilitation by Ewald Viljoen, a veteran Permaculture Design Facilitator and consultant with Food & Trees for Africa.

We are located within a community called Zuvuya that includes a mountain, streams, waterfalls, and forests. The Commons is a demonstration site for permaculture and sustainable living. Our projects include: tree nursery, kitchen garden & food forest, indigenous windbreaks, beekeeping, yurt building, fruit orchard, chickens, and the Rainbow Eco-HomeSchool. A variety of foods are grown but no cash crops, we are not a commercial farm.

We're off the grid so power comes from the sun (solar panels and batteries) and an occasional generator. This means that there is limited power. We have been donated a solar fridge, solar hot water heater, solar cookers, and rocket stoves.

Garden work includes: Making compost, Cutting grass (summer), Collecting manure, Fire breaks (winter), Weeding, Seed collecting, Planting seedlings and other plants, Hole digging for trees and maintenance of trees, Repairing fences, Cutting and chopping firewood, Harvesting crops.

Non-gardening work: Kitchen work: making breads, preserves, chutneys, etc.,yurt building, cobbing, Sharing time, skills, and energy with the children

Specialists: We're looking for WWOOFers with specific skills in permaculture, teaching kids, natural building, carpentry, stone masonry, and alternative technology and energy.

There is a minimum stay of 1 week and maximum stay of 1 month.

About the Family: Sam and Shine live at and manage the Commons. They co-parent two children's ages 10 and 8.

Accommodation is either in a a yurt or caravan. Kitchen and ablutions are shared. Please bring a sleeping bag and pillow if you have one.

About the Food: We ask for 4 hours of work per day. We are a vegetarian family but do eat dairy, eggs, honey.

Getting here: We are 45km from Howick, the closest town. We are 65km from Pietermaritzburg, the closest city. We are also near Impendle, a rural Zulu traditional community, about 15km away. We might be able to pick you up in Howick if it corresponds with our normal trip into town. SMS closer to the time for details.
