**** end of season ****
Anyone interested in washing/sorting wool?
About us: We are a family with two boys (5 and 3 years old) and we live in a small village near the little town of Dannenberg in northern Germany. Our home is a big old farmhouse with a pretty big garden, beautiful and with a lot of opportunities. We have chickens, geese, ducks and about 30 sheep. We grow some vegetables for our own needs. All this means, that there is always plenty of work for any skill level. We both are freelancers, Lisbeth works mostly in the home-office (teaching and translation), Hans Christian works at different sites and is away frequently during the weekdays.
We can use help with the animals, the garden, the renovation work of the house and the other buildings, with chopping and stacking fire-wood, and with our small farming activities. We also expect you to help with the every day household tasks. If you like to cook from time to time, you are very welcome. Maybe we can build a warm-air solar panel together, the plans are there, but so far we haven't found the time to realize them. Like many other projects... finishing a fence, painting a ceiling, continuing the clay work in the living room which still looks like under construction.... ;-) There are many tasks, and we will see which one fits your skills and desires best. New ideas are welcome!
Concerning the work hours, we do not count minutes and we expect the same from our helpXer. There are longer days and days with less work, depending on the project, weather etc. Some things have to be done every day at a certain time, e.g. closing in the animals when it's getting dark, other are more flexible. As Hans Christian is often away during the week, some bigger projects will be done on the weekends, so we might ask you to take your days off not on Sunday, but another day. Life on our little farm can be work or pleasure, the borders are sometimes a bit fuzzy. We do think, that work can be hard and still be fun. Don't be afraid: so far we found a good balance for all our guests. Our experience shows, that 2 to 4 weeks is a good length for both, helpXer and us. If we get along well, we happily agree on a longer visit.
We expect you to adapt to our rhythm with getting up not too late and rather fixed mealtimes and coffee/tea breaks. In exchange of about five hours work a day, we offer you accommodation and home-cooked meals.
You will have your own room and we can host you the whole year, but spring and summer are nicest with plenty of time for the garden and eating outside, fall is harvesting time: making juice, picking fruits etc. Winter is time for forest work and renovation.
The area where we live is perfect for cycling and we have bikes you can use. The river Elbe is always worth a detour. We also have a canoe, so you can go canoeing on the small river nearby. By train, you can reach Berlin in three hours, Hamburg in two hours and Lueneburg in only one hour. We provide wlan-access.
Languages spoken are German, English, French, Italian and some basic Dutch.
We are a non-smoker-household, but we don't mind if you smoke, as long as you accept smoking outside. What we require, is a health insurance - luckily nobody ever needed it while staying at our place. But a farm, even a small one, is full of small accidents waiting for the tiny moment of carelessness to jump into reality.
Being comfortable with young kids is also a requirement and we might ask you to do some babysitting from time to time.
We also ask you to make the effort and include one (better: two) pictures of you in your profile; it makes it so much easier to get an idea of the person behind the profile. We have pictures in our profile, so why not you? And another thing: please make sure that you write us a personalized message - we want to know that you actually read our profile;-) And if you don't, please don't be suprised not to get an answer from us. Thanks.
We would be glad to welcome you, share our every day life with you and make it a positive and happy experience for both sides!!
Lisbeth and Hans Christian
A short P.S.: We get a lot of inquiries, which is actually great, but often, after our positive answer, we don't get a response from the potential helpXers. So it gets difficult to plan our schedule - and might take away an opportunity for others. So, PLEASE inform us about your plans, just one sentence, even (or especially) if you decide not to come! Thanks.
Another P.S.: Due to a pretty surprising experience with a couple that left after the first night we would like to add: DO NOT consider us as a host when:
- you are terribly afraid of spiders
- you cannot deal with bugs like mosquitoes, tiques or horseflies and are afraid of getting bitten and/or allergic to bites.
Please have in mind that we live at the countryside and that there are bugs around!
THANKS FOR READING :-)
