We are a pair of 40-something year old, well-intentioned weirdos living the good life through our faith in Dog. We maintain an ad hoc dog (and cat) refuge (NOT a kennel or a high turn over shelter) at our home on the Gulf coast of the Yucatan peninsula and we'd like to find an easygoing, adaptable person (or 2) to help with home repair projects and dog oversight. Patience and a sense of humor are prerequisites!
Must love the company of dogs and be interested in a stay of at least a few weeks (longer stays preferred -it takes a couple of weeks to get to know everyone).
Accommodations will be the upper floor of our house -which is currently in desperate need of an overhaul. It has been used mainly for storage for over a year. There are a few rooms, 1 bathroom and a large porch. We hope to find someone happy to inhabit and reclaim the space while getting to know and be known by the family. There are a multitude of cleaning, plumbing, tiling, electrical and painting jobs to be done. Whether or not there is a private kitchen will depend on how much has been accomplished before your stay. One kitchen or 2, you'll be welcome to share whatever food we have. We are vegan and Sean is an excellent cook!
We're most interested in those with no strict itinerary who may be open to a longer term stay as a caretaker/collaborator/kindred spirit. We make a lot of concessions to be able to live with so many dogs and we realize our 'alternative lifestyle' isn't for everyone! You must be comfortable using a hammock, as we have a minimum of furniture.
Please be aware:
When it is hot here it is scorching!
Sometimes it is humid.
There will be barking.
There will be unexplained power and/or Internet outages.
There will not be air conditioning.
When the bugs are bad ...well you get the idea. You wouldn't actually believe how bad the bugs can get.
On the plus side
You'll be surrounded by happy dogs and cats (and a rooster).
We are on the beach (usually bereft of people for kilometers other than small boats of fisherman).
We are within walking distance to salt ponds, mangroves and the 'protected' biosphere.
This area has lots of interesting animals and medicinal plants.
The weather can be idyllic.
We are a few kilometers outside of Celestun (no supermarkets, banks or nightlife) and a 1 1/2 hour drive/bus ride from Merida, a city of a million people.
Books and bikes to borrow.
