We live on a beautiful farm near Ullapool in the Highlands of Scotland surrounded by hills by a sea loch and with a lively village seven miles away. Accommodation is usually a mobile home with a shower and heating, adjacent to the farmhouse but warmer arrangements are made in the winter. We farm sheep and cows, and help is needed with feeding them, fencing, basic joinery and general farm work as well as drivng, and sometimes helping with the NHS hindcull, which is an amazing experience. Helpxes generally enjoy themselves and we have enjoyed having them. The highland experience is very unique, the people interesting and friendly. There will be an experienced supervisor and the next door farms have volunteers too who will socialise with those helping here in the local village which has live music. We find helpxes of 25 upwards most suitable and those who like the outdoor life and are strong fit, responsible and eager to learn new skills enjoy themselves the most

A "Natural" Building Project in the Scottish Highlands.

Hi HelpXers,

We live in a beautiful wooded glen (valley) near a village called Spinningdale about 50 miles (80 km.) north of Inverness in the northern Scottish Highlands, where we have a 6 acre (2.4 hectare) former croft (a "croft" is a traditional small Highland farmstead).

We are surrounded by 1700 acres (700 hectares) of stunning natural woodland belonging to a conservation body called The Woodland Trust. We help look after the woods as Voluntary Wardens.

Jim is an environmental scientist with a particular interest in ecological design and sustainable building using natural materials.

Saddhavati is an artist and teacher.

We are nearing completion of our "natural" home. It is a "passive solar" design based around a traditional post and beam timber frame with "breathing" external walls clad with untreated larch and a living green roof. The building is insulated throughout with hemp fibre and sheep's wool... more inside

Katie and I own a small crofting home in the rural heart of the Scottish West Highlands in a small village called Lochailort.

During the summer months and peak times we offer Bed and Breakfast or Self / Catering to paying guests.

We are always looking for ongoing help (couple ideally) with a minimum stay of 4 weeks or longer if you can.

We are currently seeking volunteers from mid-late March (and beyond) who are able and willing to stay a couple of months or more ideally...

We are remote, but the area is stunning and can be just the most beautiful in all seasons.

Your first passion must be a love for nature and the rural environment. We are 27 miles from the nearest town (Fort William), and surrounded by mountains and a small stream. The Harry Potter railway passes by our back door. The seaside is just 5 minutes away and we are fortunate to live in one of the most scenic parts of the North West Highlands.

During time off you are welcome to make use of our bikes... more inside
