LONGTERM OPPORTUNITY, BEAUTIFUL APARTMENT, 12hrs A WEEK.
We live in a beautiful part of the Highlands, with low rainfall and plenty of sunshine, on a busy croft with self catering holiday homes. We are looking for a person/couple to help here and join in our lifestyle.
We are looking for someone who enjoys estate and property maintenance, organic farming and gardening, mostly outside work, but who could occasionally help with cleaning the holiday homes and cooking, and has an ethos of living reasonably lightly.
You will need to be strong and practical and able to spend 3 or 4 hours a week using a mower, strimer, hedgecutter or chainsaw. Hopefully you can drive a tractor, help with building repairs, look after the animals, and more occasionally help clean holiday homes. It will be a bonus if you can cook organic wholefood meals from fresh produce. We are addicted to building in a sustainable way and are building an eco-lodge to replace the caravan.
Strength, enthusiasm and commit... more inside

We are a fun-loving hostel right in the heart of Edinburgh's fantastic old town. The hostel is in a historic building just off the famous Royal Mile in Scotland's fascinating and vibrant capital.
We offer our guests a warm welcome and a friendly atmosphere in a unique and clean environment.

As a helper you would be part of our international house keeping team. The work consists mainly of the daily cleaning jobs in the hostel, like making beds, cleaning the kitchen, showers and toilets, hoovering and doing laundry. You would work 2 hours per day for your accommodation in one of our staff dorms, a free laundry wash per week, and internet.

It's important for us to maintain a very high standard of cleanliness. We also want all our guests to feel comfortable and welcome, so we like our staff to be friendly and outgoing and happy to get in touch with our guests and other staff.
We require a minimum stay of one month.

As a busy hostel we need cleaners all year round. So ... more inside

A "Natural" Building Project in the Scottish Highlands.

*** July 2014 - We are not taking any more volunteers for the rest of the summer. However, we are still keen to talk to anyone, particularly couples, interested in a longer-term placement starting in 2015. ***

Hi HelpXers,

We live, together with our ten year old mad cocker spaniel, Kim, in a beautiful wooded glen (valley) near a village called Spinningdale about 50 miles (80 km.) north of Inverness in the northern Scottish Highlands. We have a 6 acre (2.4 hectare) former croft (a "croft" is a traditional small Highland farmstead), which we are gradually developing as a Permaculture site. We are surrounded by 1700 acres (700 hectares) of stunning natural woodland belonging to a conservation body called The Woodland Trust. We help look after the woods as Voluntary Wardens.

Jim is an environmental scientist with a particular interest in ecological design and sustainable building using natural materials.
