Hi, we are currently looking for helpers (spring and summer 2017). Thank you for your interest.

Located in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, we are Mason Bee Keepers and non-certified organic gardeners living on an urban lot bordering a salmon bearing creek and forest. Our shade garden has native plants that attract birds and bees. Sunnier spots grow fruit trees and berries in raised beds. Entrusted with care for a riparian environment, we garden to create soil, shade and stability for the critters as well as nourishment for our ourselves.

We raise Mason Bees, and sell live cocoons and Bee houses each spring at the Farmer's Market. Mason Bees are peaceful, docile, don't sting and are native to their local habitat. If you are interested in learning about gardening with wild pollinators, you’ll have opportunities to ask, observe, help and learn.

Seasonal tasks include: stacking firewood, help with garden projects (weeding, maintaining raised beds, mulching, composting)... more inside

The work is varied and depends on the weather. Help is required approximately 24 hours/week.
Accommodation is in the house and meals are provided, eating with the family - our palate is variable, non-vegetarian but vegetarians are welcome. We seem to be covered until September 2017.

We live on Vancouver Island, not in the city of Vancouver. A ferry from the mainland or a direct flight into Victoria is the best way to get here. It takes about half a day to get from Vancouver city to us in Shawnigan Lake on Vancouver Island. We live in a suburban development in a rural setting. Shawnigan Lake is 45 minutes north from Victoria.

We both work full-time in Victoria, so we are needing help with childcare of our two girls, Sunny, 9 years old and Samantha, 6 years old. Sunny is in grade 4 and Samantha Kindergarten. Since the girls will be in school during the day, our helper will get them ready and off to the bus for school for 8am and be available again at 3pm to receive them before Tim and I get home from work. During the daytime, we would expect some housework or yardwork to be done and some meal preparation. Besides those hours, the time would be yours to spend as you wish. Evenings and weekends would also be ... more inside

Welcome to our historic herb farm. This magical place is incredibly inspirational, and we (Brea and Todd and 2 young children and our fun-living Farm Manager, Marly) couldn't be more honoured to be the new guardians of this land. This history here is rich – this is after all rumoured to be the location of Saanichton’s first schoolhouse and more recently is where Noel Richardson wrote her 4 famous cookbooks and contributed to CityFood Magazine for years while peering out over the spectacular gardens. Her husband, Andrew Yeomen, was also an author and amazing gardener. Together they created a very special place that at the time (1979 until 2014) required from them a significant leap of faith and subsequently plunged them into the world of organic farming. An adventure like theirs has been something that Brea has dreamed about since childhood, and for her the reality of living this dream is much sweeter then she could ever have imagined. Hello wonderful Helpx community:-) We are a family of 5 living near Victoria on beautiful Vancouver Island. In the past, we have traveled extensively, but we just moved into our dream home, and now with small children we are feeling a need to travel vicariously through others and meet some fabulous people. We have met so many wonderful people through helpx!

Our new home has spectacular views, a hot tub and absolutely amazing hiking trails near by. Sooke is 13 km away, and Victoria is 30 km away. The surrounding area is fantastic - ocean beaches and lakes within a few km, many parks, and a great trail system. We have a resident owl who routinely serenades us. Bus service is available, but limited. Crispin drives into Victoria daily for work, so carpooling could be a option.

Our lovely guest room is very comfortable, and has views across the garden and into the surrounding forest. Laundry and Wifi are available. We would be also open to hosting a family with children. ... more inside

We now have helpers for May. Thanks!

Our self-contained suite is available then, so that the couple will be able to do their own cooking and be independent. We will provide the food and invite the helpx-ers for 1 or 2 meals a week with us.

We need help with a wide range of outdoor work, including garden cleanup, mulching, weeding, planting, lawn care, power washing, etc, as well as window cleaning and some housekeeping and painting.

We expect about 20 hours of work per week per person in exchange for accommodation and food.

We recommend you make your stay with us part of a larger exploration of Vancouver Island, which is full of magical places. In May the lake is still pretty cold for swimming, but you can enjoy canoeing and kayaking.

You can see detailed pix of the suite at our VRBO site, although it's geared towards summer vacation renters.

Hi! Thanks for checking us out!

*please note! We are booked up until mid August!*

We live on a cozy acre of partially forested land nestled in a quiet neighbourhood by the sea just 15 minutes from downtown Victoria by bus - 10 minutes by car. Here we keep 20 chickens, 3 ducks, 5 honey bee hives, our loveable Australian Shepherd named Bandit, our 2 cats (R2D2 and Luke Skywalker), and several small gardens.

We are a 2 minute walk from a major bus route into town and are happy to help with transportation ourselves as well. There are also several small beaches and an oceanside park within walking distance!

Our accommodation includes your own private suite with private bathroom and balcony with ocean view. We also have an outdoor Hot Tub, bicycles, and canoes which we are happy to share!

A bit about us:

After spending 2 years living primitively off the land, Travis returned to Victoria to manage a locally owned hobby farm store. He spends his weekdays there and is at h... more inside
