Doe Bay is a rustic resort and retreat center in the San Juan Islands in Washington State. Located on 35 acres of coastal property on Orcas Island, the Doe Bay community serves as the cultural and social hub of the Eastern side of the island. We operate a bourgeoning seed to table program from our on-site garden that provides many of the ingredients for the vegetarian/pescatarian menu served at the Doe Bay Cafe. The cafe garners a reputation in the region for delicious seasonal and local fare and is a unique gathering place for local islanders, folks from the Pacific Northwest, and guests from around the U.S. and the world. In addition to the garden and cafe, Doe Bay is perhaps most famously known for its hot tubs and sauna. These relaxing amenities overlook Otter Cove and provide bathers a unique view of the San Juan Islands and the Puget Sound. Doe Bay also offers on-site yoga classes, therapeutic massage, and a unique library open to staff and guests. As a Doe Bay work tra... more inside

We are welcoming more human helpers (pets are welcome too, btw) now through end of October (ish), and potentially longer for the right folks.

We try to have 6-11 worktraders/community members. We have 62 acres of farmland, forest, pond/creeks, highlands, valley and lowlands. Veggie/aromatic gardens farmed naturally/via various methods of permaculture. Berries & nuts(strawberry, blackberry, hawthorn, elderberry, hazelnut) and trees: pear, apple, chums, plums, cherries and so forth. (We are not an orchard, but we do have a myriad of fruiting trees.) We have a fibonacci sequence solar shower done, with compost toilet and outdoor kitchen to be finished soon, a few gathering spots (and we open the house up to all the worktraders; mi casa es su casa), a tipi shade structure and more. We have a dozen chickens, a few goats with more to come shortly, a couple cats, anywhere from a couple dogs to more, depending on what sorts of friends our community member/worktraders bring.

In 2014 we will be having several work weeks focusing on light construction, root cellar digging, forest thinning work, earthen plaster, gardening work, etc.
(update July 2014: root cellar digging is done, we need help raising geodesic dome, forest thinning + gardening work)

Helper accommodations are separate from main house...in private rooms (under construction, but usable)

Our main person is a retired university professor who'll teach + demo lo-cost renewable energy systems, living energies (Schauberger, Tesla, ++), community microgrids and biodynamic gardening to helpers.

This is a nature sanctuary (very quiet) at 4200ft elevation (cool in summer).

We have a small (1/2 acre)biodynamic garden, 900sf greenhouse and are building a learning center that will help people learn about living energies and community microgrids. Our operation is 100% closed loop and self-reliant: zero operating cost, 100% rainwater, energyplus (beyond net zero),+++

We are a small community with many group projects actively being created each month. We are especially interested in individuals and couples who have some contractor skills and/or have experience in building, gardening, use of tools, and are community minded. Painting, planting, creating structures, organizing, cleaning, weeding, tiling, creating good soils etc are some of the tasks needed.

While we list as 'organic' on this site we are not certified and do not choose to use chemicals in growing food crops.

Please do understand that a stay with us is a group experience. We meet 2x / week, cook some meals together and are seeking those who have good communication skills.

For more information the best thing to do is to contact us by email with a phone number so a member can have a conversation with you do discover if we are a match.

Looking for person or persons to work 3 hours a day, 5 days a week in the morning. The rest of the time is your own, and you may do as you like.
Duties would include general yard and garden work. Also cleaning pens and coop, feeding animals, collecting eggs, picking fruit, vegetables, and nuts in the growing seasons. Other times would be general yard, garden or pen cleanup, or help out as needed. House work would be general chores, like sweeping, dusting, dishes. There is always something to do here, no matter what skills you may have.

If you have carpentry, electrical, or plumbing skills it would be a plus. Building, sheet rocking, wall papering, tiling, or finish carpentry would be a huge plus. Our house was never completely finished, because my husband has had 9 major surgeries and can no longer do the work himself.

We have a large vegetable garden 9 months of the year. This year we have added a whole new section for Spring planting, and will be planting 4 new fruit tre... more inside

I have purchased a home that needs lots of help! I am making up this word but it is in desperate need of being "cute-ified." We are close to the base of Sequoia National Park in California's San Joaquin Valley, and a couple hours drive from Yosemite National Park, San Francisco and Los Angeles. My area, in many ways, is considered to be the best place in California to live because we are centrally located. We are 30 minutes from the mountains, 2.5 hours from Los Angeles, and 2 hours from the beach as well as 3.5 hours from San Francisco.

I have worked as a Helper last summer in France so I know that perspective and will be sensitive to that. I am fine with someone staying only a week as I understand this area is more of a launching pad to other areas in California.

My son and I are into sustainable living practices and we do all that we can to preserve the natural resources that we have. Our valley is in the highest stages of drought so we are exceedingly careful w... more inside
