"Resident volunteers" from HelpX and Wwoof have been a Godsend to our non-profit working ranch serving children and animals on our 15 acre ranch. When we lost our site development funding the day after 9-11, we thought the ranch would go under. But the children who had been coming to the ranch during after school programs and summer camps refused to let that happen. They gave up their fun time on the ranch riding horses and driving go-carts to work every minute they could to keep the ranch going. They hand dug fence posts, built shelters for the animals and did whatever was needed.

In as much as they loved the ranch, they missed their fun times on the ranch until we got our first "resident volunteer" from Wwoof and more followed who also came from HelpX.

Once we signed up with HelpX and Wwoof, the ranch has continually progressed forward thanks to some wonderful help from around the world.

The kids are so very grateful for all who have come and who have left them with wo... more inside

We are an intentional community of people dedicated to discovering new ways of interdependent living grounded in three principles: 1) Service to each other, the broader community, and the world. 2) Continual intellectual, spiritual, creative, and emotional growth. 3) Conscientious, reflective, responsible, and sustainable living. We are not trying to create a counter-culture or a separatist society but rather a new way of existing within the current society grounded in these principles. We live on five acres in Corbett Canyon just outside of San Luis Obispo and Arroyo Grande on the Central Coast of California. Our name, The Lavra, comes from the Greek word for the place where lives come together, a sort of intersection of souls. In the late Roman monastic tradition, monks living within this model each had their own 'monastic' cell or hermitage, but came together for occasional meals, social interaction, and common spiritual life. Together, they created an environment that supported ... more inside

American Quarterhorses, black Angus and chickens. Spanish spoken here. This is a peaceful setting in a rural area but accessible to shopping and the city. Closest large cities: Oak Harbor, Washington, (a free bus can take you there) and Everett, Washington (accessible via ferry and bus) We offer food, free laundry service, wifi and dish Latino when at the big house. We don't allow smoking anywhere on the property or any drugs. An occasional drink is ok but no drunks (it scares the animals)We can always use help shoveling horse manure, repairing fences and corrals, brushing horses, even house cleaning or cooking if that is your thing. This is a place where you can spend a lot of quiet time reading if you llike or participating in many community activities if you like that. There are a lot of things to see in the area, winter and summer and we can take you to see many of them if it works into the schedule.

Our farm is located in the southern end of the Antelope Valley at about 5k elevation; 5min. from good hiking, and about 15min. from town (Movies, Mall, Water Park, Bowling, Archery, and other various events and activities to choose from). Great views all around! Weather; mornings 50-65, mid-day 60-75, and eve. about the same; for now (Spring time). We grow all types of veggies, and have a small orchard; no farm animals just a few family pets... :) We are not organic because we do not believe in paying the massive fees for big brother to inspect our farm and say OK you can do business now. Will soon begin using our Cold Frame which needs a second cover pulled over it since the first was cut a bit short by the manufacturer. I use drip tape and practical methods to farm in our area with as much renewable resources as possible, such as manure, compost and mulch.
Looking For:
1-2 Farm Helper's who can stay for at least 1 Month! Call to discuss accommodations. We will possibly need long... more inside

We are an off the grid homestead. We produce much of our own food, with organic, biodynamic garden, dairy goats and chickens. We have two dogs and a cat. We are located in a redwood forest, 7 miles inland from the coast on a ridgetop. Karl works from home with some travel as a meeting consultant and Melinda is an acupuncturist with a clinic located about 20 minutes away at Sea Ranch.
Our interests are Taoist meditation and Tai Chi practices, cooking everything fresh ideally from our garden, goats, chickens and other local sources, nature, our animals. Basically, our way of life is how we spend our time.

In addition to short helpx stays, we are now also looking for individuals or couples who have farming or carpentry experience for stays of 6 months or longer. In this case there would be some wages in combination with a place to live in exchange for work. The terms of this agreement would be negotiable depending upon skills of the individuals.
For short term stays, we need help... more inside

Doe Bay is a rustic resort and retreat center in the San Juan Islands in Washington State. Located on 35 acres of coastal property on Orcas Island, the Doe Bay community serves as the cultural and social hub of the Eastern side of the island. We operate a bourgeoning seed to table program from our on-site garden that provides many of the ingredients for the vegetarian/pescatarian menu served at the Doe Bay Cafe. The cafe garners a reputation in the region for delicious seasonal and local fare and is a unique gathering place for local islanders, folks from the Pacific Northwest, and guests from around the U.S. and the world. In addition to the garden and cafe, Doe Bay is perhaps most famously known for its hot tubs and sauna. These relaxing amenities overlook Otter Cove and provide bathers a unique view of the San Juan Islands and the Puget Sound. Doe Bay also offers on-site yoga classes, therapeutic massage, and a unique library open to staff and guests. As a Doe Bay work tra... more inside

We're in need of immediate help for September!
For 39 years our remote mountain farm has hosted volunteers who receive room and board for free while working here. We currently house and feed folks who work for a month at a time, in exchange for 25 hours of work per week (just like the cultural exchange of WWOOFing).

We are a pro-LGBTQI community of spiritually-minded environmental and social justice activists. Our 80 year old Catholic Worker FARMING Movement has also hosted guests from the city as part of the idea of working positively against industrialism for the sake of healthy human relationships with each other, our enemies, and the earth.

Our specific farm has held monthly retreats for 20 years for folks with HIV/AIDS and we have 1/10 acre gardening space in the meadow plus three other smaller gardens at the retreat house and the host houses. The food we grow is to feed our guests and ourselves. We use the biointensive gardening method and are moving towards more perm... more inside
