We are in beautiful Charlottesville, Virginia, next to the University of Virginia, nestled in the valley, just at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and close to many historical places. We have all kinds of fun jobs to do here. We grow an extensive array of fruits and vegetables. We're always experimenting and trying new things and we would be very happy to have your help in caring for these plantings.
We often do small building projects so there are plenty of small construction-related jobs to do as well. We also run a real-estate business and have a non-profit foundation. I host a weekly classical music radio show for the University of Virginia, and do various other things that keep me enjoyably busy. We try to have fun.
This is a very happy household. We usually eat dinner together around 6 pm each night. We enjoy our work, the fun, and the rest.

This West Virginia homestead has 3 acres in grass and 21 in trees; sort of Permaculture with a mix of trees, shrubs, perennial plants and a little livestock - hoping to create a more self-sustaining ecosystem that will yield crops and other things.
The Place: Upon entering the hollow/valley, looking to the right are 10 acres -some cleared semi-level bottom land with year round creek- beyond that is woods. Looking to the left is 14 wooded acres with clearing for the small rustic buildings, yard, and garden.
Responsibilities: Help mow grass, cut weeds, general upkeep. Apiary-bee keeping. Care of chickens, cats and dogs. Plant, weed, cultivate and harvest flowers, herbs, and vegetables. Home-can vegetables - gardening April to fall frost. Water 9 young fruit trees in dry periods. Subject to change. Work is done according to priority & situation at the time. A typical day might include all or limited aspects of the above. Hours of work per day are negotiable.

This ridgetop farm is a piece of heaven on earth. We have about 20 acres of rolling mountain top fields and another 25 that is wooded hollers. We especially love the big sky feeling we have here on the ridge. Bruce is a psychotherapist and works full time. Gwen works as a part time service coordinator at the local senior center. We are developing this farm to be a working sheep and goat farm. We are building a herd/flock of sheep and goats with the goal of reaching 20-30 ewes and does in a few years. We raise our own beef, chickens for meat and eggs, turkeys, and dairy and meat goats and we make our own cheeses and continue to expand our skills in that area. We have a Tenn.Walker mare that is a joy to ride. We have a big garden that requires attention and harvesting from March through November. We have a beautiful sheep guardian dog. (maremma) and have four barn cats. Our barn and sheds provide all the buildings we need, but they all lean one way or the other and need ...

If you want to visit NYC, this may be your chance to experience the Big Apple in your free time.
Generally, I can host for a maximum of 3 weeks, but between Oct 2013 - March 2014, there maybe an opportunity for a one or two month exchange.
For a POSITIVE response, read the entire description before sending a message and include answers to the questions listed (as well as questions you have for me.)
I live on the 5th floor of a walk up building in a 3 room pre-war apartment in a safe part of the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan. It's a few minutes walk to the subway station. 5 minutes to Columbia University or the Apollo Theater. 10 minutes to Central Park. 15 minutes to Metro North.
15 minute subway ride to Times Square, Yankee Stadium, Museum Mile. 20 minutes to Penn Station or Port Authority. 30 minutes to LGA airport or Grand Central. 90 minutes to JFK or EWR airports. If using taxis to/from airports, the trip takes half the amount of time.

We welcome all travelers to come experience a bit of urban life here at our lovely home, which is located in upstate New York (six-hour drive to NYC).
Even during the winter months, there is always plenty to do!
We coordinate with several groups and people throughout Rochester in order to make our city (and the world!) a better place. Our focus is on community building and sustainability.
Generally, there are anywhere between 10-14 people living here at any given time in addition to those being hosted. We can accommodate up to 3 HelpXers. You will be provided with a bed and will most likely be staying in our "Travelers' Room", which accommodates up to 4 travelers. In some instances, it may be necessary to shift you to a different room depending on the number of guests we are hosting at any given time.
In keeping with our sustainable approach to living, the food served here is vegan and prepared using local and organic ingredients whenever possible. Helpers are we...

We teach Agnihotra, an ancient method of purifying the atmosphere through specially prepared fire. People all over the world use Agnihotra for organic farming, personal healing, stress reduction, and to heal the environment from the effects of pollution. We also teach Homa Therapy farming.
We have a lakefront property with a large organic garden and woods. Excellent hiking trails are fairly nearby in Shenandoah National Park. (Helpers may use our Park Pass and visit the park free of charge.) Runners and hikers can also use the nearby fire trail, which is walking distance from our house. We are working toward a self-sufficient, sustainable lifestyle, and have solar-powered electric and hot water, a large solar dehydrator, a rocket stove and 2 Zebu cows. We've also begun experimenting with a solar oven.
We have many outdoor projects--gardening, yard work, landscaping and beautifying the place. If the weather is rainy or too hot/cold, work may involve cleaning the workshop, hel...

We are a people-loving family of 5 living on an urban homestead in the city of Lancaster City, PA. We recently purchased a 100+ year old house and after remodeling for 2 years, there is still no lack of work to be done.
Anna cares for our three small children and can show you how she makes kombucha, kefir, sourdough bread, fermented veggies, and an ever-expanding line of homemade herbal medicines. She cooks nearly all of our food from "scratch", often with locally sourced organic food or produce from our garden. Clair loves to garden and is currently apprenticing with his father to be the farm manager of a 100 acre 5-generation family orchard. He is working on maximizing our small space to get as much food as possible out of our little space, along with medicinal and native plants. He enjoys composting our kitchen waste and humanure. Other of our interests include homeschooling, making homemade cheese/butter, top-bar beekeeping, vermicomposting, winemaking, seed-saving, a...

I am a single Christian man of 25 years of age. I bought a house recently that is taking a lot of work to bring it to livable conditions. Carpentry, painting, finishing and wiring is very helpful. I am also trying to develop the small back yard into some intensive gardens as well as fruit so gardening experience is extremely helpful. In exchange for helping around my place you would need to work approximately half a day or perhaps every other day. I am very flexible. You would be free to explore the city or do what you like. I am very strong in my faith but have no problem accepting people of any religion. I am especially open to having people for short periods from 2 days up to perhaps up to a month. I usually have to work at my job some, but will be happy to hang out and show you around. If you are at all interested contact me and we can try to work something out! I am of course very fluent in English and do quite well in German. I know a very small amount of Serbian/Bosnian/...

Our Farm is located high in the forested Oley hills about 1.5 hours NE of Philadelphia, in the southeast corner of Pennsylvania. We raise pastured poultry, hogs, and sometimes sheep and goats too, and we also grow some veggies for our own use. We welcome last-minute helpers and if you are planning ahead that's great too!
Daily activities center around caring for livestock and whatever projects are in progress. When we moved here, our farm hadn't been farmed for over 30 years, so a lot of our current projects revolve around reclaiming fields and restoring buildings, so folks with renovation experience are particularly welcome. We are very interested in alternative energy and green building, so try and incorporate these principles into our projects.
There are also opportunities to visit other farms in the area, and there may also be workshops and field days in this region that may be of interest. There may also be opportunities for part-time/casual work in the area.
We usuall...

My husband Jason (42) and I (36) run a primitive skills school on our developing 138 acre homestead. We have a main house, accessory buildings, and tons of forest. We are novice homesteaders and we're learning as we go! We have 2 indoor cats, a black lab and free range goats who mostly haunt the front porch. Accommodations can include the basement with 4 bunks, a small barn or tent camping anywhere on the property. We are in need of help with construction projects around the farm (e.g. pavilions, raised beds), simple farming projects like putting in a wheat field for the fall, and/or help teaching classes in primitive skills. If you don't know how to do a hand drill fire now, you will when you leave us.
