We are a family of 4- mom, dad 11 year-old boy and Granny with 3 dogs, 4 cats and a lot of chickens! We have moved to an 8ha property in September 2013 and started from scratch as there were no buildings and no grid power. We are building our own steel-framed, straw bale house with all means of alternative power. Our long-term goal is to be self-sustaining.
Most importantly right now, We would like short-term help building. We are at the plastering, electrical and plumbing stage. There are still other things which need doing like setting up food gardens, repairing fencing, animal care, path making etc. At present granny is using the cabin so we have a campground under trees made by other volunteers.
We have tents, sleeping bags and mattresses. The shared ablutions and meals are with the family. We eat mostly simple, vegetarian food with eggs from our hens and occasional meat, and dairy bought in. We would prefer 24 + aged volunteers who can work on their own if needed. As we are... more inside

Description

We are a family of four living on a twenty hectare ORGANIC FARM.
Our aim is to be as self-sufficient as possible and farm in a morally responsible manner while enjoying a peaceful lifestyle.
We have +/- twenty cows which we milk, eat and use as fertilizors; three breeding pigs; in-numeral chickens for eggs, meat and as de-tickers; a flock of geese. The herd of goats is for land-clearing and milk; the horse, mule and donkey for grazing rotation. Our four dogs besides being pets are for breeding. We also have a few hives of bees for honey.
We grow our own vegetables in our large vegetable garden.
We have two children, who are HOME SCHOOLED, so volunteers who enjoy children are especially welcome.

Area

We are situated in Byrne Valley, Richmond, Kwazulu Natal. A very beautiful, serene and picturesque area with natural grasslands, indigenous forest and a small village of mainly RETIRED people. There are beautiful walks we would be happy to show you.

We are a guest lodge and wildlife rehabilitation center based close to Kruger Park.

We run the guest lodge with overnight accommodation, a bar, restaurant and pool in order to fund the work we do with wildlife.

The wildlife center takes in injured and orphaned wildlife and rehabilitates it with the aim of release back into the wild. We mainly work with primates but also take in antelope, birds, and small predators.

We are mainly looking for help in the bar in the lodge in the evenings. This involves 2 - 3 hours (sometimes more if it’s a busy night) working in the bar - serving drinks and possibly meals to our guests and other volunteers.

During the day volunteers are welcome to get involved with the work at the wildlife center. This involves work such as feeding, cleaning, hand raising baby animals, medicating sick animals etc.

In return we will provide accommodation in shared rooms and 3 basic meals a day.

Our bar has become popular with the locals and I need help to run it at night. I need volunteers who feel that they can manage late night revelers and who will enjoy the bonus of getting tips, normally 10% of take. The nature of the position requires a minimum of a 2 month commitment and I am wanting to fill my roster through to December 2018.

We are currently recruiting for our winter season! We need hands in most departments, front of house, running the adventure centre, housekeeping and kitchen duties. We are also looking for avid gardeners! (removal of alien vegetation and establishing new veg and herb gardens). Our priority at the moment is a dynamic and super friendly tutor for an 8 year old malawian girl. Other interests like art would be of great help. We need general helpers for our bar, kayaks kitchen etc. In return for your services we offer dorm accommodation . All meals and free use of our adventure equipment like kayaks and stand up paddle boards, as well as fre... more inside
