We are a family of 5 who lead regular city lives, however we are in the process of trying to convert our home, into an urban farm with food forest / permaculture / organic influences.

We currently have fruit and nut trees, some chickens, ducks and quail, some annual vegetable patches and a small nursery.

With summer on the way, we are getting into annual planting, compost spreading and shade tree clearing. We have started with our watering regime. With a bit of luck you might get to choose your work from the list if I have no preference. In no special order.

Antbear Lodge offers visitors a unique opportunity of a volunteer program for those of you who would like to spend a bit more time being a bit closer to the South Africa lifestyle. Andrew used to volunteer all over the world 30 years ago and loved the experience and this is something he has created to give something back.

Volunteers have 3 options.

1. Conny has 9 horses and is continually training and excising them. We practice the softer horse whispering techniques and go for slow outrides on the farm. We have a foal that needs a lot of attention too. Conny also has a few donkeys to need to be cared for. Most of the animals on the farm were rescues and are now living in a very loving and cared for space.

2. You can work together with Andrew doing woodwork and alternative building. Andrew will teach you our unique style of woodwork and alternative building. Passion for this is everything but experience will help too. Its difficult to say exactly what you will be doing but w... more inside

Our 50 hectare guest and horse farm near Stanford in the Western Cape is nestled in one of the most beautiful valleys just 2 hours from Cape Town, close to the Southernmost tip of Africa. The farm dates back to 1846 and has buildings converted into luxury accommodation for up to 22 people. In addition to our bed & breakfast business, we have a wedding venue and weekend restaurant on the farm. We have 10 horses, 3 donkeys, Nguni cattle, chickens, ducks, dogs and cats!

We are looking for a helper or two to come and help us with primarily with our beautiful horses, mostly thoroughbreds - outriding, schooling, and taking guests out on outrides around the farm and in the area. Also some help with guest house business, such as helping as a waiter/waitress, so some hospitality experience is a bonus.

Helpers need to stay for minimum 4 weeks.

This is a privately owned ancient indigenous forest situated between Stanford and Gansbaai in the Western Cape. It is a 2 hour drive from Cape Town and set in a beautiful valley. The forest is a short 15 minute drive from Walker Bay where the Southern Right Whales return each year to birth their young. Shops and restaurants are easily accessible.

We are open to guests and offers forest trails, as well as accommodation set beneath the ancient trees. There is a tree nursery of indigenous trees, many of which are grown for rehabilitating parts of the forest that were felled in days past. Thousands of these trees are planted in these rehabilitation sites each year in May when the first winter rains start. The planting takes place during the annual Reforest Festivals that are held at Platbos.

Volunteers can also learn about the Platbos African Tree Essences (see www.africantreeessences.co.za)

We took on the management of the family property and guesthouse in 2015 with a vision of creating a small scale mixed enterprise farm with a focus on conservation, regeneration and self-sufficiency. We grow, make and bake as much of our own food as possible. The second part of this vision is to create retreat style country accommodation and offer training and courses along these lines.
Our farm consists of organic vegetable growing, chickens, geese and have just planted a bio-intensive market garden while we build up capital for livestock as part of our regenerative agriculture ethos.

We are looking for helpers to assist with the day to day operations of the farm and guesthouse. This includes maintenance, building, tree felling, gardening, carpentry, livestock care and management, planting and harvesting on the farm. A 50hectare indigenous forest is home to over 200 species of birds so we would like to maintain existing trails and perhaps set up new walking trails.

We are a nature reserve at the edge of Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area. We need volunteers for the SA summer period (December/January) mostly to help with the guest house. The guest house is not very busy, so there is ample time to participate in a variety of tasks, from ringing birds (Alan's research project associated with the FitzPatrick Institute, University of Cape Town) and wildlife monitoring (camera trap maintenance and data entry) to orchard work. You will probably also be asked to occasionally keep an eye on 2 children aged 6 and 4, who like the outdoors and going for walks.

We will preferentially take volunteers who can spend more than 1 month. Some tasks involve predawn starts and a lot of time in the mountains.

Other main projects include alien vegetation control, erosion control on our dirt roads, and maintaining hiking trails. All sorts of other tasks may also appear, depending on time of year, what needs fixing etc. Most of the work that we need done throughout... more inside

Our bar has become popular with the locals and I need help to run it at night. I need volunteers who feel that they can manage late night revelers and who will enjoy the bonus of getting tips, normally 10% of take. Daytime bar Duties start at 8-00 am - 4pm. This shift will include opening, cashup from the previous night and a full day shift; back up in the evening should you feel like it! The nature of the position requires a minimum of a 3 month commitment and I am wanting to fill my roster through to July 2018.

We are currently recruiting for another super high season! We need hands in most departments, front of house, running the adventure centre, housekeeping and kitchen duties. We are also looking for avid gardeners! (removal of alien vegetation and establishing new veg and herb gardens). Our priority at the moment is a dynamic and super friendly front of house person as well as a general helper (bar, kayaks kitchen etc) for a 6 month period. In return for your service... more inside
