We are a family of 4- mom, dad 10 year-old boy and Granny with 3 dogs, 4 cats and 28 chickens. We have moved to an 8ha property in Baardskeerdersbos rural community at the end of September 2013. We have started from scratch as there were no buildings and no grid power. We are building our own steel-framed, straw bale house with all means of alternative power. On-going work is setting up veggie gardens, orchards and seedling greenhouses to grow fresh produce and seed as part of our income. Our long-term goal is to be self-sustaining.
We would like short-term help building with straw bales, setting up food gardens, repairing fencing, animal care, path making and other daily chores. We offer a private timber bungalow with a comfy queen bed, shared ablutions and meals with the family. We eat mostly simple, vegetarian food with eggs from our hens and occasional meat, and dairy bought in. We would prefer 24 + aged volunteers who can work on their own if needed. As we are fairly remote, c... more inside

Antbear Lodge offers visitors a unique opportunity of a volunteer program for those of you who would like to spend a bit more time being a bit closer to the South Africa lifestyle. Andrew used to volunteer all over the world 30 years ago and loved the experience and this is something he has created to give something back.

Volunteers have 2 options.

1. You can either work together with Andrew doing woodwork and alternative building. Andrew will teach you our unique style of woodwork and alternative building. Passion for this is everything but experience will help too. Its difficult to say exactly what you will be doing but we integrate volunteers into our sustainable projects. Its dusty so make sure you bring cloths you don't mind getting dirty. And this is where I think the real opportunities are to be found and the longer you stay the more you will get from the experience. Once you show you are getting a handle on things you will be responsible your own project.

2. The s... more inside

*** Please note that we currently have helpers and are not taking helpers until October ***

We are a family of 5 who lead regular city lives, however we are in the process of trying to convert our home, into an urban farm with food forest / permaculture / organic influences.

We currently have fruit and nut trees, some chickens, ducks and quail, some annual vegetable patches and a small nursery.

With winter here, we are getting into planting and pruning. With a bit of luck you might get to choose your work from the list if I have no preference. In no special order.
Building a ramp to the front of the house.
Setting up our Aquaponics system.
Rain tanks are connected, leaf catchers needed
Building wicking beds, recycled bricks obtained.
Building large storage rain tank stands, recycled bricks obtained.
Propagating and repotting in the nursery
Turning compost

Life is a book and if you don't travel you only read the first page...

In December 2005 I was very fortunate to travel abroad for two years after finishing school. I met a lot of people and formed lifelong friendships with a few people from all around the globe, Learned more in those two years than the12 years in school....

I return back to South Africa in December 2007 and started the journey like every other young South African in a career, I over excelled in every career position I faced, thus was I very successful very young, I became a financial manager at BMW and stagnated in that position for the last three years. The reason I'm sharing this because I feel/know that the experiences and knowledge I gained was from meeting new people from all over the world and formed me into this special individual.

NOW- Back back to the present:
In these years back in South Africa I got married to the most beautiful, clever, one-of-a-kind girl that supports me and build me up every ... more inside

We are a family aiming for self-sustainability, spread over two farms in the Overberg region of the Western Cape. We're two hours from Cape Town, and twenty minutes from the sea. Our main projects at the moment are planting fruit trees, expanding our vegetable gardens, clearing invasive vegetation from our indigenous forests, and building another cob house.

We're interested in volunteers for the extra helping hands, the fresh ideas and perspectives, the conversation, and the community.

Working aside, we have plenty of fun here, including hiking and swimming among waterfalls and forests in our private nature reserve in the mountains, surfing at the nearby beaches, and regular trips to the beautiful city of Cape Town.

We're a father and two brothers (depending on who is out and about on other work or adventures, we may not all be on the farm), as well as a few other long-term volunteers who have essentially become part of the family. The farm itself has 11 other families on d... more inside

Small farm with garagist winery and two guest self catering homes in two other towns.
The cellar produces 2,000 bottles of handcrafted wines. It has a beautiful garden and 110 years old manor house. This all need to be kept neat.
During harvest season January-March there is a lot of work in the cellar. During the rest of the year there is work to be done on the farmyard and in the cellar.
Guest workers will help all over and could work when and for how long per day as we agree upon. The meals are included with the stay.
The farm is 20km away from the nearest town, Malmesbury and 80km away from Cape Town. Public transport is not really available but we go to town daily and very often to Cape Town if the guest worker wishes to travel with for sight seeing. Hours can be discussed and also the work to be done.
The work is not hard physical labour and if I, a 60+ person can do it so can any one.
If the guest wants to travel, they will be more than welcome.

We are a small permaculture based, self-sustainable (or building towards it) holding:- mixed farming herbs, fruit, vegetables, chickens and eggs, cattle and milk and horses, pigs, sheep turkeys, rabbits, at this time mostly for own use, but we do sell small amounts through a veggie box system. The animal systems, veggie gardens, etc are still being designed, made and put into place. We have only been here for 7 months, and are keen for anyone (or two) persons who would like to help us to achieve sustainability and who would enjoy becoming part of the family for a month or few months. We are totally off - grid

Our bar has become popular with the locals and I need help to run it at night. I need volunteers who feel that they can manage late night revelers and who will enjoy the bonus of getting tips, normally 10% of take. Duties start at 4-00 pm.. The nature of the position requires a minimum of a 2 month commitment and I am wanting to fill my roster through to December this year.

We are currently recruiting for another super high season! We need hands in most departments, Bartenders, front of house, running the adventure centre, housekeeping and kitchen duties. We are also looking for avid gardeners! (removal of alien vegetation and establishing new veg and herb gardens) In return for your services we offer dorm accommodation, all meals and free use of our adventure equipment like kayaks and stand up paddle boards. You will also have plenty of time to explore our backyard.

We are located on a hill just across from the Beach. Boasting breathtaking views, purest of air and scenery, nestled slightly in a semi-tropical forest by the sea...this is the place which is known for its one-of-a-kind amazing atmosphere, tantalizingly delicious foods, private self-catering cottages, soulful connections, fresh yet traditional outlooks, and its wide variety of endlessly rejuvinating activities like hiking, swimming in waterfalls, drumming, village excursions.. the list is infinite.
