Hello HelpXers,

Thank you for visiting my page!
I am Sean, and I am the manager of New Orlean's newest hostel--Madame Isabelle's House.
Madame Isabelle's family moved to New Orleans in the early 1900s before moving out of the city around 2002. The house was originally built in 1831. Her family had expanded and decorated the house before her father endowed to her. She and her husband continued to develop the house for their lifetime.

The house is beautifully decorated and furnished, describing the architectural characteristics of the old New Orleans' houses. As we are proud of the details of the house, we would like you to enjoy every part of the house.

The hostel is located a block away from French Quarter and is surrounded by tons of famous local restaurants. We are also a 10 minute walk to Bourbon St, 5 minutes to Frenchmen St, 10 minutes to Louis Armstrong Park, and 15 minutes to downtown. At the corner of our street there are bus stops with five routes to the city's ... more inside

Our small community in the heart of New Orleans is growing and building. Located next to one of the largest city parks in the country and a newly completed linear park and bike trail that ends right at the French Quarter, we've got the best spot in town for a combination of nature/peace/health and city fun! One or two volunteers are needed for help on the computer, community gardening, landscaping, building, organizing events/classes including a weekly live music/ community dinner. Our Center has weekly classes in Yoga, Meditation and Tai Chi.

The volunteer work plan will be set at the beginning of each week. Volunteers will be expected to donate a minimum of 20 hours per week in exchange for accommodation with some occasional meals as a bonus for exceptional work. A second option would be Apprentice/Volunteer at 35 hours per week which would also include a bicycle, plus $100 per week for food/groceries. Also provided for both volunteer levels is use of the Community Kitchen. ... more inside

Looking for assistance in developing a spiritual retreat. The property is located in SW Louisiana, 3 hours from New Orleans and 2.5 hours from Houston. The property is 2 acres with a 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath country home.

We have accomplished much over the last 2.5 years but there is so much more to do.

I have taken a sabbatical from New Orleans to see this project through . You may share home with other HelpXers. You will connect with Mother Nature and live a simple life style. You will eat well and enjoy much laughter.

Will provide transportation from New Orleans or Houston should you not have transportation to the land. You MUST give me much prior notice so I can arrange pickup with my schedule.

Hey there! You can check out my couchsurfing profile link above for more details on me, but in short, my name's Danny and I'm a 29 yr old lady. I spent a few years traveling around the world through helpx and I just bought a duplex in New Orleans. It's a short walk to St. Claude and Bywater, and a slightly longer walk to the French Quarter. The house is in pretty good condition, but I'm looking for "handy" people with construction, plumbing and/or electrical experience. There are also some odd jobs that I could use help with around the place, so if you aren't especially handy, I can definitely find something to keep you busy.
The main projects I'd like to complete next are:

-Setting up rain barrel system (I have them just haven't connected them to the gutters yet)
-Building a small storage shed in the backyard
-Small woodworking projects around the house, like putting up bike hooks, shelving, etc
- Scraping paint off the windows

I have friends with tools, so I think w... more inside

I need simple assistance with either some very simply carpentry work or some assistance with building a garden. In exchange for work once to 3 times a week, I can offer an infinite amount of housing and food. If you have zero skills and can assist with grabbing tools and giving me advice then I can house you as well. I am not picky. There has been a few people who never did any work due to lack of opportunity, and I was perfectly OK with that. They were still willing to help and that's the biggest part.

About my house. It is close to being done. It needs just insulation and drywall and floors. What a bitch it will be. But be warned, this place does not have the usual amenities most houses do. We poop in an outhouse and have limited electrical/plumbing and zero heat and air conditioning. I tell all my guests that if you hate my place and want to leave then it wont hurt my feelings. I understand if someone can't live the way I do. Come and stay for a little and see how you... more inside

Our place, located in the heart of Cajun and Creole country of Southwest Louisiana, is both old & new (built in the late 1890’s & then we started new in 2006). Surrounded by established farm and ranch lands, we are building a rural cultural and educational center based on permaculture & “transitional community”-oriented ideas and energy. We have some very interesting repurposed buildings on our property, including an historic agricultural plantation. We also have a renovated horse barn and South Louisiana’s premiere underground honky tonk called The Whirlybird. We list on Airbnb, VRBO and TripAdvisor and we use our property for cultural and educational functions. Activities for Helpers: construction, organic gardening, landscaping, pecan orchard development, rain collection program, development of old farm well, cultural and educational programming; such as, workshops, retreats, live music & dancing, storytelling, podcasts, film. We are looking for hard-working and fun-loving ... more inside

The Ark is a fantastical house renovation project in progress. It's a magical and open space that has been created and shaped by the occupants over the last three years. The house already has all regular amenities: kitchen and bathrooms, internet and a washer. It's just a little not finished. Our work continues on the interior and exterior of the house - but now we are to the fun part, designing and finishing rooms! Check out our facebook page for some more images of the process (and us)!

Tiny Circus, a collaborative project that creates stop-motion animations with community groups is also based out of the house, and there may be some opportunity to get involved if desired.

We live cooperatively and communally in the house. We have meetings on Sunday mornings from 10 AM - Noon to clean the house and communicate about our living situation. These meetings are mandatory and you'll probably enjoy them even if you stayed out 'til 4 am the night before.

Helpers will... more inside

I can't wait to share my pride and joy with you! I started this hostel with the dream of meeting other travelers and providing them with some of the amenities I thought were missing in New Orleans' hostels at the time. I searched and searched and settled on this home based on its distance to public transportation, its layout, the services offered within such a close proximity, and its location, situated centrally between the French Quarter-Downtown and Garden District-Uptown. I believe working/staying here will definitely allow you to have a great experience in New Orleans.

We usually have 4-6 work/stay volunteers who stay in a private dorm set aside just for them which has a private bathroom. They work around 24 hours per week in exchange for stay. We have 3 positions; Front Desk and Laundry, Room Cleaning, and Party Organizer.

Front desk workers work 2 12 hours shifts and have the other 5 days per week off. They start their day putting out breakfast, eating with our g... more inside
