Our small community in the heart of New Orleans is growing and building. Located next to one of the largest city parks in the country and a newly completed linear park and bike trail that ends right at the French Quarter, we've got the best spot in town for a combination of nature/peace/health and city fun! One or two volunteers are needed for help with computer tasks, community gardening, landscaping, building & organizing events. We also assist elders and other neighbors that may need our help. The Center has weekly classes in Yoga, Meditation, Tai Chi along with occasional music performances and other special events.

The volunteer work plan will be set at the beginning of each week. Volunteers will be expected to donate a minimum of 20 hours per week in exchange for accommodation. A second option would be Apprentice/Volunteer at 35 hours per week which would also include a bicycle, plus $100 per week for food/groceries. Accommodation will be provided in a small cabin or an ... more inside

I'm a guy in my late 20s, and I bought this property in January of 2013. With the help of friends, couch surfers, and lots of wasteful construction sites I have so far built two small shacks, a chicken coop, a tree house, several raised garden beds, a composting toilet and other things all FOR FREE using building materials found in dumpsters. My main project is building a house, also using salvaged materials, but not exclusively. This is a "normal" house, with all the proper permits and code requirements.

I'm looking for people who want to come be a part of the community here, and help with various projects. There are typically between 3 and 12 people living on the property at a time. Some of us (myself included) have jobs which take up a lot of our time. Not only do we dumpster dive building materials, but also food. If you're not okay with eating this "reclaimed" food, you'll have to buy most of your own food.

There is a pretty good mix of skilled work and unskilled ... more inside

This is a fantastical house renovation project in progress. It's a magical and open space that has been created and shaped by the occupants over the last four years. The house already has all regular amenities: kitchen and bathrooms, internet and a washer. It's just a little not finished. Our work continues on the interior and exterior of the house. Check out our facebook page for some more images of the process (and us)!

Tiny Circus, a collaborative project that creates stop-motion animations with community groups is also based out of the house, and there may be some opportunity to get involved.

Helpers will work 15 hours per week (4 half days) in exchange for a comfy bed in a shared room and use of the house and kitchen. Internet too! Helpers provide their own food, though we may work out a cost share/family dinners if there are enough of us in the house. There are two helper rooms with three beds each. We are looking for folks with a range of skills. Any kind of f... more inside

Need help ASAP!

I can't wait to share my pride and joy with you! I started this hostel with the dream of meeting other travelers and providing them with some of the amenities I thought were missing in New Orleans' hostels at the time. I searched and searched and settled on this home based on its distance to public transportation, its layout, the services offered within such a close proximity, and its location, situated centrally between the French Quarter-Downtown and Garden District-Uptown. I believe working/staying here will definitely allow you to have a great experience in New Orleans.

We usually have 4-6 work/stay volunteers who stay in a private dorm set aside just for them which has a private bathroom. They work around 24 hours per week in exchange for stay.

For staff we usually have 4-6 others besides myself. The hours you are on duty per week really depends on the task we need you for, but at the most its about 24 hours. If you are in the office you do two... more inside

I need simple assistance with either some very simply carpentry work or some assistance with maintaining a garden. In exchange for work once to 3 times a week, I can offer an infinite amount of housing and possibly food, depending. If you have zero skills and can assist with grabbing tools and giving me advice then I can house you as well. I am not picky. There has been a few people who never did any work due to lack of opportunity, and I was perfectly OK with that. They were still willing to help and that's the biggest part.

We are halfway to becoming completely sustainable and organic. Our poop is turned to soil, our urine is turned to fertilizer, some of our garden plots are turned to crops, and we have parted ways with buying groceries from stores completely for the last three years.

About my house. It is close to being done. It needs just insulation and drywall and floors. What a bitch it will be. But be warned, this place does not have the usual amenities most ho... more inside

The Treehouse Guesthouse has four bedrooms and a camping area all centered around a 400 sq ft treehouse in a urban setting. We opened in January 2015 and have been wonderfully busy hosting guests from all over the world.

Our projects for April through August include: improving the camping areas and gardens and building an outdoor shower & kitchen. Since we have a Guesthouse, there are always tasks related to laundry, cleaning and cooking with the guests. We also have some construction projects for folks with building skills. Our construction supervisor is a formed Habitat for Humanity coordinator, so he is very good at teaching building skills. Our current projects involve using recycled materials.

This is South Louisiana, so of course, you will eat well and meet some friendly people. Let us know what you like and we will help you have fun while you work with us! There are many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, music venues, festivals and food that South Louisi... more inside
