I am an hard-working traveler myself, with a wide variety of interests, skills, and experiences. My passion is transforming neglected spaces and objects into useful and beautiful ones. I am currently involved in a project in Southwest Louisiana (about 2 hours west of New Orleans), renovating an abandoned cabin in a sweet little town called Arnaudville. Much of the cabin work is done. Plans for the fall include landscaping steps down to the bayou and constructing a small creek and waterfall in the back yard. It's a great part of the world here with lots of good people, good food, good music and dance and culture. French travelers very welcome (I speak French as do many locals).

I'm a guy in my late 20s, and I bought this property in January of 2013. With the help of friends, couch surfers, and lots of wasteful construction sites I have so far built two small shacks, a chicken coop, a tree house, several raised garden beds, a composting toilet and other things all FOR FREE using building materials found in dumpsters. I have just recently finished obtaining all the permits to build my house, which I have only just started. And I have a big pile of lumber ready to go!

I'm looking for people who want to come be a part of the community here, and help with various projects. There are typically between 3 and 12 people living on the property at a time. Some of us (myself included) have jobs which take up a lot of our time. Not only do we dumpster dive building materials, but also food. If you're not okay with eating this "reclaimed" food, you'll have to buy most of your own food.

There is a pretty good mix of skilled work and unskilled work needed. My mai... more inside

I can't wait to share my pride and joy with you! I started this hostel with the dream of meeting other travelers and providing them with some of the amenities I thought were missing in New Orleans' hostels at the time. I searched and searched and settled on this home based on its distance to public transportation, its layout, the services offered within such a close proximity, and its location, situated centrally between the French Quarter-Downtown and Garden District-Uptown. I believe working/staying here will definitely allow you to have a great experience in New Orleans.

We usually have up to 4 work/stay volunteers who stay in a private dorm set aside just for them which has a private bathroom. They generally work from 24-30 hours per week in exchange for stay. Their work involves either just working the reception, laundry, tending to guests needs, and hanging out with guests at different events OR can also involve some cleaning duties. We usually have other people hire... more inside

Hey there! You can check out my couchsurfing profile link above for more details on me, but in short, my name's Danny and I'm a 29 yr old lady. I spent a few years traveling around the world through helpx and I just bought a duplex in New Orleans. It's a short walk to St. Claude and Bywater, and a slightly longer walk to the French Quarter. The house is in pretty good condition, but I'm looking for "handy" people with construction, plumbing and/or electrical experience. There are also some odd jobs that I could use help with around the place, so if you aren't especially handy, I can definitely find something to keep you busy. Oh yeah, and yard work - getting some garden beds going, and establishing a better composting system than what I currently have would be great.
The main projects I'd like to complete next are:

-Setting up rain barrel system (I have them just haven't connected them to the gutters yet)
-Replacing the laminate countertops with wood
-Building a small storage ... more inside

I just bought this land 2/10/15, so as you can imagine, this project is just getting started. (I need to update the pictures).

This is a 1 acre former industrial site with a history of a lumber yard and auto repair business. I know of no toxic releases in particular, but it is by no means a natural, fertile site. We will be bringing in soil and organics to cover up the historic, compacted, zombie soil, and making it a thriving, productive, beautiful place. Much of it will be an edible forest savanna pasture garden with animals. Also, I there has been some interest show from others in being project leaders for such things as a compost project, film projections, a huge wall mural, a free cafe/store/library, bike repair.

The aim on this land is to live in a way that heals and creates living systems rather than destroys them and that promotes self-sufficiency/skills, freedom, and connection/responsibility/relationship.

Ideally, we will not buy anything and will strive to g... more inside

Our place is located in the heart of Cajun and Creole country of Southwest Louisiana, is both old & new (built in the late 1890’s & then we started new in 2006). Surrounded by established farm and ranch lands, we are building a rural cultural and educational center based on permaculture & “transitional community”-oriented ideas and energy. We have some very interesting buildings on our property, including an historic agricultural plantation. We also have a renovated horse barn and South Louisiana’s premiere underground honky tonk called The Whirlybird, both are listed on Airbnb and we use them for cultural functions. Activities for WWOOF-ers and HelpX-ers: construction, organic gardening, landscaping, pecan orchard development, rain collection program, development of old farm well, cultural and educational programming; such as, workshops, retreats, live music & dancing, storytelling, podcasts, film. We are looking for hard-working and fun-loving adults to help us develop our uni... more inside

The Treehouse Guesthouse has four bedrooms and a camping area all centered around a 400 sq ft treehouse in a urban setting. We opened in January 2015 and have been wonderfully busy hosting guests from all over the world.

Our projects for June, July and August include: improving the camping areas and gardens and building an outdoor shower & kitchen. Since we have a Guesthouse, there are always tasks related to laundry, cleaning and cooking with the guests. We also have some construction projects for folks with building skills. Our construction supervisor is a formed Habitat for Humanity coordinator, so he is very good at teaching building skills. Our current projects involve using recycled materials.

This is South Louisiana, so of course, you will eat well and meet some friendly people. Let us know what you like and we will help you have fun while you work with us! There are many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, music venues, festivals and food that South Louis... more inside
