Our small community in the heart of New Orleans is growing and building. Located next to one of the largest city parks in the country and a newly completed linear park and bike trail that ends right at the French Quarter, we've got the best spot in town for a combination of nature/peace/health and city fun! One or two volunteers are needed for help with computer tasks, community gardening, landscaping, construction/building & organizing events. We also assist elders and other neighbors that may need our help. The Center has weekly classes in Yoga, Meditation, Tai Chi along with occasional music performances and other special events.

The volunteer work plan will be set at the beginning of each week. Volunteers will be expected to donate a minimum of 20 hours per week (usually 9AM-1PM M-F) in exchange for accommodation. A second option would be Apprentice/Volunteer at 35 hours per week which would include a $100 weekly allowance for food/groceries. Accommodation will be provided... more inside

I need simple assistance with either some very simply carpentry work or some assistance with maintaining a garden. In exchange for work once to 3 times a week, I can offer an infinite amount of housing and possibly food, depending. If you have zero skills and can assist with grabbing tools and giving me advice then I can house you as well. I am not picky. There has been a few people who never did any work due to lack of opportunity, and I was perfectly OK with that. They were still willing to help and that's the biggest part.

We are halfway to becoming completely sustainable and organic. Our poop is turned to soil, our urine is turned to fertilizer, some of our garden plots are turned to crops, and we have parted ways with buying groceries from stores completely for the last three years.

About my house. It is close to being done. It needs just insulation and drywall and floors. What a bitch it will be. But be warned, this place does not have the usual amenities most ho... more inside

Our family operates four Airbnb guesthouses in Lafayette, Louisiana, We opened in January 2015 and have been wonderfully busy hosting guests from all over the world. Our first Guesthouse was The Treehouse Guesthouse and you can see it on our Youtube video: Treehouse Guesthouse Lafayette Louisiana. Since 2015 we have developed three more Airbnb homes. We have had more than 20 HelpX helpers in participate in building and improving our homes. We love the creative input and the "joie de vivre" that HelpX folks have brought to our projects.

Since we have Guesthouses, there are always tasks related to laundry, cleaning and maintenance. We also have construction projects where we teach building skills. Our projects are supervised by staff with lots of construction experience and tools, so you have the opportunity to learn new skills and use a variety of tools. Some of our current projects involve painting, using recycled materials, constructing an outdoor kitchen. We ju... more inside

Need Help for April 2017 onwards!

I can't wait to share my pride and joy with you! I started this hostel with the dream of meeting other travelers and providing them with some of the amenities I thought were missing in New Orleans' hostels at the time. I searched and searched and settled on this home based on its distance to public transportation, its layout, the services offered within such a close proximity, and its location, situated centrally between the French Quarter-Downtown and Garden District-Uptown. I believe working/staying here will definitely allow you to have a great experience in New Orleans.

We usually have 4-6 work/stay volunteers who stay in a private dorm set aside just for them which has a private bathroom. They work around 24 hours per week in exchange for stay.

For staff we usually have 4-6 others besides myself. The hours you are on duty per week really depends on the task we need you for, but at the most its about 24 hours. If you are in the... more inside

Welcome to the heart of Cajun Country! My property sits right along the beautiful Bayou Portage in the area known as Grand Anse. At the end of the road is the Henderson Levee, on the other side of which is the Atchafalaya Basin, the largest swamp in the United States.

I am currently in the process of renovating the old house that sits on the property, with plans to open the first ever Kayaker Hostel in south Louisiana.

There is much to be done on this old property! We will be clearing land along the bayou in preparation for the kayak launch, fixing up the old workshop, building a treehouse in the giant pecan tree, and of course- renovating the main house.

Applicants with reliable transportation and/or construction or carpentry experience will be considered first!

The property is out in the country, but not too rural. There are stores and town stuff within a 5 minute drive, and it's about 30 minutes from Lafayette (the "big city", around here).

We have electrici... more inside

Hello HelpXers,

Thank you for visiting my page!
I am Sean, and I am the manager of New Orlean's newest hostel.

The house was originally built in 1831. It is beautifully decorated and furnished, describing the architectural characteristics of the old New Orleans' houses. As we are proud of the details of the house, we would like you to enjoy every part of the house.

We would be happy to have a couple more volunteers to help with cleaning, front desk, and/or organize events.
The current team is myself and 6 staff members.
You will be sharing a staff dorm room (2 bunk beds) with other helpers. Breakfast food is always available and Wednesday Jambalaya dinner also free to volunteers. Also I definitely try to treat the helpers to lunch or dinner as many times as possible.

Requirements
* Experience or willingness to interact with different cultures on a daily basis
* Must be able to speak good English
* Help period should be 6 WEEKS to six months any time of a year.

I'm a guy in my late 20s, and I bought this property in January of 2013. With the help of friends, couch surfers, and lots of wasteful construction sites I have so far built two small shacks, a chicken coop, a tree house, several raised garden beds, a composting toilet and other things all FOR FREE using building materials found in dumpsters. My main project is building a house, also using salvaged materials, but not exclusively. This is a "normal" house, with all the proper permits and code requirements.

I'm looking for people who want to come be a part of the community here, and help with various projects. There are typically between 3 and 12 people living on the property at a time. Some of us (myself included) have jobs which take up a lot of our time. Not only do we dumpster dive building materials, but also food. If you're not okay with eating this "reclaimed" food, you'll have to buy most of your own food.

There is a pretty good mix of skilled work and unskilled ... more inside

This is a fantastical house renovation project in progress. It's a magical and open space that has been created and shaped by the occupants over the last four years. The house already has all regular amenities: kitchen and bathrooms, internet and a washer. It's just a little not finished. Our work continues on the interior and exterior of the house. Check out our facebook page for some more images of the process (and us)!

Tiny Circus, a collaborative project that creates stop-motion animations with community groups is also based out of the house, and there may be some opportunity to get involved.

Helpers will work 3 hours per day (20 hours per week) in exchange for a comfy bed in a shared room and use of the house and kitchen. Internet too! Several bikes are available. Helpers can contribute $20 a week to share staple foods. There are several helper rooms, some are private, some shared. We are looking for folks with a range of skills. Any kind of finish carpentry or... more inside
