We grow an extensive array of fruits and vegetables. We're always experimenting and trying new things. We always need help caring for these plantings. There are plenty of odd jobs to do as well. We're located next to the University of Virginia, and close to the mountains as well as many historical places.

We teach Agnihotra, an ancient method of purifying the atmosphere through specially prepared fire. People all over the world use Agnihotra for organic farming, personal healing, stress reduction, and to heal the environment from the effects of pollution. We also teach Homa Therapy farming.

We have a lakefront property with a large organic garden and woods. Excellent hiking trails are fairly nearby in Shenandoah National Park. (Helpers may use our Park Pass and visit the park free of charge.) Runners and hikers can also use the nearby fire trail, which is walking distance from our house. We are working toward a self-sufficient, sustainable lifestyle, and have solar-powered electric and hot water, a large solar dehydrator, a rocket stove and 2 Zebu cows. We've also begun experimenting with a solar oven.

We have many outdoor projects--gardening, yard work, landscaping and beautifying the place.
If the weather is rainy or too hot/cold, work may involve cleaning the workshop, hel... more inside

Hi, I'm Cole. My home is a 41 foot power boat in Gloucester, VA. I own a restaurant and work 7 days a week. I need help around the boat with general maintenance, mostly exterior, washing, sanding, painting, varnishing. I have a small, 1/2 acre property where the boat is located and there may be some work around there, weeding, minor gardening feeding the ducks and chickens I raise. I would only expect a couple of hours work each morning. The location is somewhat remote, very quiet and peaceful. Open minded (I am gay), relaxed atmosphere. There is a kayak available for use. High speed internet is also available. Sleeping quarters for guests is a rear cabin with two single size berths, bathroom is shared. I provide food, but because of the hours I work you would often be cooking for yourself. May through October is the best time to come, as there is much more to do outdoors and on the water, kayaking, fishing, swimming in the creek.
Thanks for looking!

rebuilding an abandoned tobacco farm 84 acres to sell produce and small livestock. have contracts but need some help!! it's pretty rural here and rough and tumble but we do live comfortable.. could use a few more hands pruning fruit trees, clearing land and always gardening, feeding and caring for chickens & turkeys as well as horse and donkeys!!!
.... would like to see artists and craftsman doing their thing too in their spare time.. i am asking for 15+ hours per week in exchange for a camp site and food. there's plenty of camping space and i do have a few unfinished buildings to use also.
please no drugs, excessive drinking, drama and non- smoking would be nice too!!

Our place is a 20 acre homestead in Floyd County, Virginia where we try to do what we can in terms of living simply, sustainably and ecologically. We've got a long way to go, but everyday work towards living closer to the earth.

We are open to all kinds of ways to share this beautiful and bountiful homestead with others; from visiting for a few weeks to a full season. There are a lot of opportunities to be involved in the garden, fruit production, building projects, trail building and various other projects. Come with no experience or a bunch, we all can grow and learn from one another whether it's working or socializing together.

The property is very private; mostly wooded with a large creek meandering through and a few strong springs. It has a large garden and another one acre plot available for someone wanting to pursue market gardening. There are hiking trails throughout and we have a great network of friends in our neighborhood and the surrounding county. In fact, many WW... more inside

###thanks to great helpers, always looking for others####

We're working a Permaculture-inspired homestead with Nubian dairy goats, sheep, ducks, chickens, and Great Pyrenees. We're on the west side of the Blue Ridge, up against the Alleghenies. There's a big garden, and we heat with wood, so we're looking for generalists who are willing to do/learn anything from moving mulch to helping make goat cheese or canning fruits and vegetables, stacking wood, or helping with children or maintenance/buildings. We're a mile from National Forest, Appalachian Trail, and good river and streams -- for swimming, canoeing, hiking. 5 hrs/day work in exchange for a little cabin(see photo, there's a porch on it now) where you can stay and board.

We are a quiet family looking for a cultural experience. The wife (non-Japanese)speaks some Japanese and wants her children more fully exposed to the language. We are also looking for some minor assistance around the home (conversing in Japanese, grocery shopping, light cleaning, shared cooking, laundry= all time totaling no more than 20 hours per week). We have a nice guest room (see picture below)with cable television and wifi (bring own computer/laptop). Ideally we would like someone who wishes to stay for awhile, perhaps a student. We are within walking distance to a four-year college. Wife is an English teacher and wouldn't mind assisting some with English if needed. We are interested in female, fluent Japanese speakers. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Ideal Helper:
Someone who is willing to jump in and help and put their best foot forward. If you have experience in some of things listed below then great, if you don't we will be happy to give you some! We have quite a few animals so someone who likes being around them is a must.
We can take one person at a time, or two people if they don't mind staying in the same room.

Length of stay:
Shorter terms work best for us, around two weeks is ideal.

About Us:
We are a family of six, but only four are living at home. Ed is a Carpenter and works for a nearby University (Longwood University, Farmville Virginia.) Rachael is a Veterinarian and owns a small animal hospital (we see companion animals) on the farm. Morgan (31) lives about an hour away and works for a local building contractor. Matt (27) lives thirty minutes away and works as a project engineer for a contract company. Maya (21) is at home now for the semester but lives in New York where she is attending Parsons Schoo... more inside

Our farm is a project to build a farm, community and education center that is off the grid and uses no fossil fuels. We have a business growing wholesale vegetable seeds which we mainly sell to a local seed company, Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. We are currently cultivating about 3 acres, and 2013 will be our third growing season.

In addition to running the farm, we are currently working on building our first residence and developing the alternative energy infrastructure that we need to build our community. Volunteers, especially those with skills, are welcome to help out on construction, carpentry, and alternative energy projects, as well as helping out around the farm.

Our farm is part of a network of egalitarian and income-sharing communities in Louisa County that includes Twin Oaks and Acorn Communities.

I am a small beginning farmer trying to get my farm semi or fully self sustaining by using salvaged materials. I need at least two self motivated persons with some mechanical abilities and creativity. I have several projects that need to be completed including the guest bunk house and fence expansion. I currently have one extra room in my home which will be furnished with a bed and a sofa for my guest's until the bunk house is complete. My guests will need to help with daily tasks around my farm in exchange for a nice clean bed (or sofa), a stocked kitchen and a nice hot shower. There will be some amount of a stipend depending on what work can be found off of the farm. I currently have three pigs eight goats and two dogs and I am expanding my herd as funding allows. If you have a car or truck that would be a plus since I am located 8+ miles from the nearest town.
