Farm on a small island in the beautiful coastal landscape of North Norway. If you like to live isolated from people but be a small part of a mighty nature this is something for you. On the farm we grow potatoes and vegetables, we keep cattle and sheep that roam free on the island in the summer and about 17 horses. We provide hard physical work, often cold weather, midnight sun, northern lights, organic food, your own room, good company.

At the moment we are also looking for one or two persons that want to stay on the farm for a year or longer, as well as helpers for one month or longer in Summer.
We urgently need a couple helpers who can stay from after 24 November to January (over Christmas and New Year at least)

Welcome to my home on the shore of rural Tofterøy island, in the midst of wild, beautiful nature, on Norway's western coast!

Bergen city is an hour's bus ride north-east.

Some nights we'll be many, and you may be asked to share room with another helper.

Here is a great variety of activities to enjoy. It may be gardening, daily household of course, house- and boat maintenance, dogwalking, help with new constructions ... Your interests count, and your suggestions will be appreciated!

I provide the instructions/teaching you need, and will be around for some co-work and for discussions/questions. I like new ideas. You’ll often work relatively independent, and structure your time yourself - with my help.

I'm happy if you work 15-20 hours a week in average during your stay.

A neighbour helps us develop permaculture gardening.

I often host a nice dog for an elderly neighbour.

Here are work clothes and boots for most sizes.

General description:

We are a young family of 5, Sarah (37), Tino (36), Nemi (9), Kalle (7) and Ilya (2). Living in northern Norway. Sarah is a veterinarian, Tino is a taxidermist, both are working at Malangseidet, approximately 1 km from the farm. Høier was established in 1935 as a dairy farm but all farming was abandoned in the early 1970s. We bought Høier in 2016 and re-established farming focussing on Old Norse Sheep for meat production. During the recent two years we re-built fences, re-established pasture and grasslands and changed the cow shed into a sheep shed. Re-establishing Høier is a progress that will last for more years to come, while farming grows increasingly professional.

Tasks: We are predominantly looking for helpers who share our enthusiasm for farming, outdoors work and working smaller tasks into a larger goal. We have very practical tasks to fulfil that fit into the annual schedule and appreciate helpers with practical experience. In summer 2018, we will... more inside

At this moment I have almost full booked summer and do not need more helpers, but you can always ask and I will let you know if I have availability. We will have a short video chat on messenger and discuss when you can come and how long if I think I might have availability for you.
In the winter there is not so much to do so I only really need 1 helper. In the summer I can take up to 3 helpers.
All year long I need help feeding and taking care of my chickens (if you have experience butchering and preparing chickens for food this is a benefit also). I also need help walking my dogs, primarily my youngest dog who is a leonberger boy. He has a LOT of energy compared to my older dogs so he needs daily walking and if you are good at training dogs, you are welcome to work with him!!! Because of having 4 dogs (2 leonbergers, 1 Australian Shepherd and 1 Bichon Havanais) and 4 cats in my home, I also need help with light housekeeping. Sweeping every other day is necessary. We are Elin (46) and Marcus (43), living with our kids Peder (4) and Anders (13) on a farm in the little village of Landåsbygda.

The family is completed by four horses, two dogs, two cats, eight sheep, two pigs, some rabbits and many chicken.

We do small scale organic farming and produce most of our food ourselfs. The farm is located on the top of a hill, surrounded by deep forests and bogs. We have no direct neighbours and a nice view on the Landåsvatn-lake and the mountains all around.

We do grow a big vegetable garden and also catch some fish in the lake. One of our projects for 2018 will be to get cows and goats on the farm. We try to live as selfsufficient as possible.

Beside do we both have regular jobs, Elin works for the municipality and Marcus is a forestworker.

Elin speaks Norwegian and English, Marcus speaks German, English and Norwegian.

We need help mostly during spring and summer, round about from the end of May until beginning of September.

WELCOME/ VELKOMMEN!

We are Bart 28, Ida 27 and Johan 2. We have a homestead next to the forest and a lake in west coast Norway to which we recently moved about 2 years ago.

-

Update: We are now looking for an eager individual who would be interested in self sustainability and growing vegetables (planting, sowing, general upkeep of the garden) or timber framing;this however must be quite a specific interest as it´s Bart´s job and it can be quite intense hard work.
-

You dont need any previous experience, but must be prepared for some demanding physical work. We try to make sure that you learn as much as possible and were happy to guide you through all the work you do, as long as your willing to get stuck in!
The work will involve using power tools such as table saws and chainsaws. But dont be scared, well be there to teach you how to use them safely.
Starting from January we have lots of exciting projects coming up, including:

- Building a traditional Norwegian ti... more inside

Please note: We have now found the help we need for the summer of 2018! No more available!

It would be great if you could stay minimum 3-4 weeks. Please send us an email if you are interested and we will answer you as soon as possible.

We live in the Southeast part of Norway, 1 hr drive from Oslo, in an old, charming house at the countryside. We have two kids aged 9 and 11 and a cat. We have been host for voluntary workers for 5 years previous (as a HelpX host ) and have had the pleasure of getting to know people from around the world.

We appreciate a positive attitude and a happy mind and hope that you will feel like a part of our family during your stay. We like to watch movies, go biking, eating outside (BBQ) whenever the weather allows us to, go swimming in the ocean, go for a walk in the woods, to visit museums and other cultural events. We have a big garden and grow organic vegetables for our own use.

This spring and summer (from May until September) we n... more inside
