We are a couple with 2 grown up children, a son who has settled in Edinburgh and a daughter who is woking abroad. We run a croft - ie a small farm - in the northern Highlands of Scotland a couple of miles from the nearest village. On the croft there is also a self catering holiday cottage and caravan site. We have sheep, poultry, a sheepdog and 3 cats - and a poly tunnel. We sell farm produce at a local community market and other outlets. We farm extensively rather than intensively in order to maintain the environment and wildlife. We are always happy to help improve your English if needed or just enjoy the cultural exchange.

Current projects: mostly in the garden.

We have two double rooms available in our house this year so can accommodate two couples or two singles.
We have Wi-Fi.

Please do not apply for a placement if you smoke.

We have beautiful panoramic views here, mountains, moorlands and native woodlands. Mountain bike trails and opportunities to explore the nor... more inside

{Update 18/7/17} Sorry, our wee home cannot squeeze any more volunteers in at the moment. However, if you would still like to visit, and have a tent, camping on the croft may be a possibility, but it would be VERY basic.

Hey everyone!

This is Callum. Our wee straw bale bothy is coming on. We have completed the car tyre foundations, thanks to the fantastic work by helpexers Paul and Colin. We are now putting up the floor and wall plates and then the roof structure at the end of the July/early August. When the roof is up we will be getting the straw bales to prepare them for the wall raising at the end of August.

Hello there. My name is Nicola and together with my son Callum, we are building a wee straw bale bothy (small house) on our croft on the beautiful Isle of Skye.

We both strongly believe in Natural Building techniques, low impact and healthy homes. With the help of some wonderful volunteers we ar... more inside

We are interested in hosting helpers for short periods of time - the more independent you are, the longer we are happy to host you. Our 3 children have all left home so it is very quiet around here - if you want an exciting time, this is probably not the place to visit! We have three holiday cottages, vegetable, willow and fruit plot, bees and a small flock of hens. James has a small saw mill to convert locally grown timber, a firewood processor to produce firewood and woodworking machinery. Our heating is from a high tech log fueled boiler. Photo voltaic panels provide some of our electricity. Jane looks after the cottages and garden and makes baskets. The work is varied. Gardening, grass cutting, willow harvesting and sorting, firewood, fencing, scrub cutting, cottage changeovers, building and maintenance. Accommodation will be in our holiday cottages when space is available. This is a beautiful area to explore and we have bikes & kayaks you can borrow. Please contact b... more inside

We live in a beautiful village on the edge of Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Walking and cycling are all possible to do with ease from the front door, including a Munro ( mountain over 3000feet high). Watersports are close by too. We have a lovely old house built in 1901 that requires some TLC(tender loving care). It includes a large garden that has become overgrown. We are looking for help to redecorate the house and to regain control over the garden! We have 4 bedrooms so helpers could either have a bedroom each or a couple could have a double bed. We have two cats. One very nosy, the other very shy...We can offer short-stay accommodation and excellent food in exchange for undertaking a range of indoor and garden tasks. We may require occasional companionship to an elderly member of family who sometimes stays overnight. Non smokers preferred - we are a no smoking household.

Help with the B&B is only needed from approx. June to Oct. Please read through my profile for odd jobs help needed in the winter months.

At present, I would appreciate a helping hand with some odd chores such as cleaning of gravel, splitting wood and general maintenance - wall papering, indoor painting, use of silicone, exterior masonry repair and painting, etc. You should be able to handle power tools and hand tools. Given the nature of help needed between January and March 2015, a male helper with experience is more suitable.

KILLIN COTTAGE IS A SMALL FAMILY RUN B&B WITH 3 GUESTROOMS

* The majority of work is indoors
* Please do not apply if you're a couple or two friends, I have sleeping space for one person only
* You must be able to work independently

Help is needed as following:

APPROX. JUNE TO OCTOBER 2014 - min 2 weeks

Indoors:
- help with breakfast, clear breakfast table and clean/hoover/dust dining room/hall/stairs
- clean guest bedrooms and bathroo... more inside

We live on an 11.5-acre croft (smallholding/farm) in the very north of Scotland just 26 miles short of John 'O Groats (the most northerly village on mainland Scotland).
We have Icelandic sheep, Pygmy goats and hens and try to live/run the croft as green and environmentally friendly as possible, everything is done by hand and we don’t allow tractors or heavy machinery on the land.
We have hosted 19 volunteers over the 3 years so far, from England, Canada, Spain, France, New Zeeland.

2017……… This year we need volunteers during May, June and July to help with sheep shearing and preparing fleeces for spinning (clean fleeces, card in to rolags and spinning – if you want to have a go). Hay making (cutting hay with a scythe, raking and turning then hand baling). There will be more raised beds to build, a bit of gardening and putting in the foundations for another room. If you have an interest in cow’s you could spend a day (time allowing) with our friend who has cows and sheep.
