This is a new project of a Hare Krishna spiritual community ('Sanctuary of Peace') based in a peaceful countryside next to a small historical town Lesmahagow. Krishna Eco Farm is being developed as a holistic spiritual centre, to help re-establish the sacredness of life. The aim is to promote peace and offer a positive alternative to the dominant consumerist and materialistic world view. This is done principally by following a lifestyle based on the motto of 'simple living, high thinking'. In a long-term we are aiming for self-sufficiency, however at the moment we are making 1st steps.

Being a new project (officially launched in the beginning 2012), the eco-farm provides good opportunities for development and initiative. We invite volunteers to share their skills to develop this project. It includes a walled garden, 3 green houses, a meditation garden, energy saving technologies (windmills, bio-mass boiler, solar panels, etc.) and an ashram with temple for spiritual practices a... more inside

Remote island in Orkney group rearing North Ronaldsay Rare breed sheep -the sheep roam the island and are pretty self-sufficient, eating seaweed for preference. We clip them with hand shears and manage them without dogs. The flock is the second largest of the breed and we use their fleeces in every permutation in order to make them commercially viable - we are looking for help in every area of sheep management and maintenance of fences and buildings as well as with the production of our sheepskins, yarn and felted and woven goods. The island has many archaeological sites, seabird colonies, caves and good fishing. Our family live on the island alone but we have many visitors from local birdwatchers to pipe bands, fishermen to poets.

We moved here in the Summer of 2014. At that time it was 15 acres of bare land used for traditional agricultural purposes. The smallholding is a predominantly gentle North facing slope in a secluded valley with it's own unusual micro climate.

Since then we have planted over 1200 trees, started developing a vegetable garden and built various buildings including the small cabin that we now live in.

We are entirely OFF GRID. Our loo is a composting one, we have electricity from solar panels and water is from our burn on the land. We do have a hot shower which feels like luxury after working outside!

We have got a basic infrastructure in place, but we have so many things we are working on, from a new tree bog, to fencing, to development of swales and ponds as well as gardening and livestock management. We will try and provide a variety of jobs so you don't get bored, and to give you an idea of what off-grid smallholding life really entails.

We would expect you to work... more inside

We are building a small 8-bed bunkhouse on an island,in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. The bunkhouse is being built on the ruin of an old traditional ‘blackhouse’ and we intend to cover/clad it with the original stone. We have a builder who will erect the house. However we will need help with the stone cladding of the building. Ideally we would like someone who has some experience of working with stone or would be interested in learning about stonework. Someone who is keen to do demanding physical work for a short period of time would be ideal. In exchange for working 4 to 5 hours a day, 5 days a week , our volunteer would have their own room, use of the house, meals provided and internet access. This work will begin in May and continue until August. A volunteer could come for a couple of weeks, a month, whatever length of time would suit them.

The island is beautiful with long sandy beaches, renowned for its flowers and wild life in early summer. It is in the centre of the West... more inside
