UPDATE 10 October: We're promised sunny days for the next while - stunning autumn weather! Come and help me tidy the garden for winter... take advantage of glorious hiking weather, too.

*************

Come and do the Timewarp in Transylvania... It's a little bubble of rural paradise, 1,000m up in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania, where villagers still use horses and carts, make hay with scythes, use traditional smallholding skills and have a simple way of life. I've had a number of HelpXers over the last few years and they've made a fantastic contribution to the house and the garden, for which I'm extremely grateful. For instance: A little gang last autumn dug out a bank in the garden and built a wall and firepit with the tonnes of limestone boulders they unearthed. A couple built a long flight of steps using beams from the old shed; Asutralian Dave mended fences and chopped firewood; a couple from the UK helped create my stunning wood-lined attic; a Canadian couple dug over... more inside

* Languages spoken in the farm: French (native), English, some Romanian

* Description of the area:

Isolated farm in Transylvania, in a valley surrounded by woods (the wood is nearby – 50 meters – with a nice waterfall at wet season), streams and pasture. The closest village is Malin (400 inhabitants, 1,5 km from the farm). The first city is Beclean (10km).

* What do we grow on the farm?

We practice permaculture, and we grow our own food, for us and visitors. We are trying to reach food autonomy, so we need to harvest enough to fill the cellar for winter (potatoes, roots, jars…). We have a lot of walnuts and make oil with it. We have some chickens for eggs. We make hay for our tree donkeys and for mulching. We pick wilds flowers and make cream, oil, herbal tea...
We also do eco-construction to renovate the buildings : we are working as much as possible with natural materials (such as clay, straw, timber from the forest nearby…).

We are an enlarged family, an association supporting people with special needs to integrate step by step into community life. We have several buildings (residential, workshops and sheds), vegetable gardens and parkland - all needing help for care and upkeep.
We have had good experience since many years with serious and open-hearted volunteers who have come for a week or two up to a year or more to share our life and tasks. We look for volunteers who can help us with the organic gardens and food production, and with doing up the buildings (incl. furniture) and their surroundings. If you have artistic or craft skills, there are many people here waiting to join you in activities.
We can offer food and lodging as well as enjoyment of a pleasant surrounding you can explore by foot, bike, bus or car.
However, we are strictly no drugs, no boozing and cannot allow 3rd persons in without our permission.
Our common language is Romanian. Some of us speak English and French as well.

We are a young family of 4 (dog included, see picture) who are rebuilding some old traditional mountain cottages. Our small farm is situated in the West part of Romania, in a quiet, cut-off area of the Apuseni Mountains.
The nearest shop is 7km away and the nearest town including a bus station is 10 km away. The town is called Campeni.
We can pick you up there. The nearest airport is aprox. 100km away, in a city called Cluj-Napoca. From there you'll find buses travelling to Campeni daily 2 times a day.

Ideally we would love to be able to live there full time, as soon as the houses are ready. We also have a small organic garden, a barn who needs rebuilding and many more work to be done.
For now, we can offer a tent for sleeping or when our neighbor has enough space, helpers can sleep at his place. If helpers are staying in a tent, they should know that we don't have running water yet, nor in-house WC. Our toilet is an old-fashioned, wooden country WC.
We have an outdoor show... more inside

MAKE YOUR PRECIOUS TIME COUNT: COME AND HELP!

We are a Canadian family living in Romania trying to make a difference in our backyard.

WHY?

Old age in the Romanian countryside is a Horror! No running water, biting cold, no hot meals, being snowed in and unable to leave your home for weeks! Peasant farmers without their extended families are left to fend for themselves.

WHERE?

LISA TELEORMAN is a small town near the Danube in desperate need of a helping hand.

WHAT?

Our team is currently establishing an organic farm to offer financial support to the needs of a pay-as-you-can centre for the elderly in LISA, Teleorman, ROMANIA.

WHAT DO WE NEED FROM YOU?:

We need to have painters and help to install two bathrooms with showers. If you know how to mix cement, swing a hammer or dig you are welcome! In addition to construction workers, we need help to pull weeds and clear about 4000m2 of farm land that has not been worked for 10 years.

There is an orchard, a fi... more inside

We are running an organic apiary with around 200 bee hives. Parallel, we are building up a beekeeping school, together with colleagues from the Romanian and international beekeeping sector. Besides, we have a fruits and vegetables garden for (partial) self-sufficieny.

We work in a team with volunteers and practicants from various countries.

LANGUAGES SPOKEN: German, Romanian, English, Russian, French.

We are currently primarily looking for people who would help out with activities in the beekeeping school (seminars, bee days for children) and the apiary. Prior experience is welcome, but no precondition. Preferably, you'd stay with us for several weeks in August/September.

Since we've been asked this before by helpers: Unfortunately, we cannot offer any pay. Working hours are Mo-Sat 9 am - 17 pm with 1 hour lunch break.

Meals and housing is included. We live in a beautiful rural setting with lots of free space around. Sibiu, a pittoresque medieval city (European Cultu... more inside

Hello everyone!
We are Iris (22) and David (26) and last year bought a really nice, small farm with about 6 hectares in Bal?a, Romania. We are now living there together with our new born baby Felix.
We also have two dogs, one duck and a few chicken.
Lots of people came to visit us past summer. Helpers, family, friends. We have a lot of plans and we are just starting so we could use some help. We traveled around and did some volunteering ourselves and we really enjoyed that. Now it's finally time for us to start for ourselves.
The farm is situated on a nice 2 km, 15 minute walk, uphill, away from the village. (The road is not good so for normal cars or a van it could be a problem to get up to our house)
The surroundings are beautiful. Our land is full of fruit trees and a few walnuts.
Our plan is to start a small community, self sufficient as possible. There are more houses empty in our valley which are also for sale. We hope that nice people we know, like family but also other... more inside

LOOKING FOR A COUPLE or a SINGLE PERSON to housekeep for a minimum of 2 weeks stay!

We have an individual household in a traditional but not-so-typical romanian village, with a quite established permaculture garden -not much is planted this year though- and a small plum orchard that turned into a wild and very diverse food forest.

We have a (wild-ish) cat that misses human touch.

I lived in Stanciova for 6 years but at the beginning of the year I moved in Timisoara and Lugoj (the closest larger cities nearby) with my partner and 2 year old child. Some days I come to Stanciova because my workshop is there and it still needs some details taken care of. In the workshop i make soap and other care products + have my printing supplies for my designer work.

The help required is easy: watering the garden, weeding, keeping vegetation in check, feeding the cat. Basically maintenence work. The toilet is a compost toilet and needs to be emptied when neccesary. Basically maximum ... more inside
