We are a family of four with teenage sons who are now mostly away. We own a beautiful 40 acre croft on a Scottish Island called Lismore. It is a long, slim island situated at the mouth of the great Glen in loch Linnhe and is easy to get to; (5 min from Appin and 50 min from Oban by boat). This is a lush, fertile island with incredible views of the surrounding mountains and waters.
Our vision is to create a beautiful and inspirational nugget of Scotland where we can live self sufficiently and gently on the land, however we have a lot to do to get there and need plenty of help. I am a textile artist and run my business from a studio on the croft. (See www.mogwaiidesign.com) I run textile retreats as well as make products and commissions for sale. My husband is a house builder however he will soon turn his focus to all the things that need attending to on our land. We have 38 Shetland sheep, 3 hens, 3 cats and one dog so if you're allergic to animal hair or dust, best stear clear! We... more inside

Hi All,

My wife and I are building two Straw bale holiday lodges in our 5 acre site in Aberdeenshire.

We are looking for volunteers to help build the second lodge. This will involve learning how to build with straw, and once this is completed we will lime render the straw to protect it from the elements. We also intend to install a green (sedum) roof on both lodges.

We are looking for help mostly with the building project, but there might be a bit of general gardening/maintenance work around the land too.

We will provide food and accommodation in the form camping (toilets and showers on site). We can supply everything you need; tents, sleeping bags, camp beds electric hook up, etc..

Below is a rough timetable of dates and planned work to be carried out on the lodges:

Wednesday 14th June Thursday 6th July 2017
- Put up the straw walls, Compress, straighten, strap and trim the bales.
- Lime render the bales

Ill be doing further lime rendering from t... more inside

We are looking for short & long term help, either with farm or building work or a mix depending on your preference & experience.

We are a 20 acre family croft in a quiet location where we like help with a wide range of jobs including all aspects of growing vegetables for a box delivery round (March - December), lambing (April), firewood, tree planting, fencing, building, animal care (sheep, bees, cattle, hens). A good work ethic is more important than previous experience & we love to learn from our volunteers too!

Future projects include building a load bearing straw bale house with traditional post & beam verandas, any trades / prior experience is very welcome! (Summer 2017 onwards)

If you are looking for a long term placement then we can teach you how to grow veg & run a veg box scheme & depending on experience this would be a partly paid position.

Bus stop 1 mile away, 3 miles to village with shops, sandy beaches, dolphin watching, mountain biking (Learnie Red Rock t... more inside

This is a rural setting but on fast frequent train and bus routes to both Edinburgh and Glasgow. I have only just joined HX but been hosting on CS for years and you may get a better idea of me both as an individual and as a host, see my website link above.

I have just moved from Edinburgh to a former farmhouse outside Edinburgh sort of halfway between Glasgow and Edinburgh. As of this morning I have not yet updated my CS profile to reflect this. Too busy with unpacking cleaning and all the things I have to do now I am here and for the next many months. Hence my joining HelpX

I am looking for some light help cleaning organising outside help. planting etc and even some admin or web research work if it suits

I have no fixed views on how long you can come for 2 or 3 days or longer. Even had CS who came to my last place for 2 days and stayed 2 months

Might suit someone looking fr a central but rural setting to explore Glasgow Edinburghgh and Scotland and or some... more inside

Help very much needed with tree planting and tree care from now to end May.

We are a small alternative hill farm and woodland. We need help with building work, planting trees, soil improvement, woodworking, processing and delivering firewood and establishing zones for growing fruit/nuts/vegetables. Other interests include dry stone walling and permaculture. Accommodation is in a caravan with gas cooker and woodstove for colder evenings. Helpers usually eat meals with us, including home baking adventures (see photo 2) and culinary explorations from our guests' own repertoires. We are off grid with composting toilet. We are 20 minutes drive from the nearest shops and can collect you from station or bus stop. In the evening our location feels peaceful and remote (see photos 1 and 3) but there is regular traffic on the road during the day so hitching is an option. We also have pedal cycles you can borrow. Mobile phone networks and internet access usually possible. Wildlife on site... more inside

We are the Laurenson family. There are 4 of us who live in the house, myself, my husband and two children, aged 7 and 3. We also have a Rough Collie dog and 5 hens.

We stay in rural Aberdeenshire, although there is an occasional bus service into the nearest town (Inverurie) and regular buses/trains into the nearest city (Aberdeen) from there. Our house is in a truly beautiful location, with an elevated position giving views for miles across the countryside.

The house is quite a size with two spare double bedrooms (one fully en-suite and the other has a shower with toilet facilities across the hall) and also a second living room for guest/helper use.

We are looking for help mainly in the garden, but also some jobs in the house. We would welcome people with landscaping and joinery (carpentry) skills. The larger projects include creating paths and planting beds in the garden (total area of garden is about 1 acre and we also have a 2 acre field with a wind turbine). Now looking for help in the Autumn to put the garden to bed.No availability over the summer but may update later.

Ard Daraich has two self catering units and a plantsmans garden that is open to the public.
We need help with the garden especially in the spring and autumn. We also appreciate help with the changeovers in the holiday houses and have a large wild garden, open to the public with small plantsmans nursery, free-range hens, small vegetable patch and poly tunnel full of herbs and salads.

Help is needed with all this and in our "down to earth" lifestyle there is never a quiet moment! Whether firewood collection, foraging for mushrooms, shell fish or seaweed, collecting eggs from our rare breed flock of hens or picking soft fruit in season, there is always a job to be done!

We are an artistic couple who love people and offer hospitality to a high standard. Our volunteers will need to enjoy a changing environment with mixed demands in a stunning part of the world. Out... more inside
