Inishturk is a small beautiful island, 5km x 2.5km, located 9 miles (14.5km) off the west coast of Mayo, on the border of Connemara. It rises boldly from the wild North Atlantic in wall-like cliffs to the northwest and steep hills to the north.

Inishturk has a small population of about 50 people. Our community club is at the heart of the community and runs the only shop, bar and restaurant on the Island, as well as other community services. It is a non-profit community organisation.

Our community club needs help with running the bar and restaurant, as well as growing vegetables.

We are a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 children, both boys aged 7 and 4 years old. We have one dog, 2 cats and 2 chickens and a guinea pig. We live on a beautiful piece of land about 20 minutes drive from Galway City and just on the doorstep of the gateway to Connemara, which is a very popular destination for anyone wanting to see the beauty of Ireland. We home-school our children, following the unschooling method in particular. Our daily routine consists of all the normal domestic chores around meals, feeding the animals, doing the shopping and also lots of adventure, play and fun. There are woods, mountains and beautiful gardens all in close proximity to us and we try to get out as often as we can. Less than 5 minutes walk from our home is a regular bus service, which goes directly to Galway city and also in the opposite direction out to Connemara. We cook food from fresh every day and are vegetarian.

We need help with the general daily domestic chores, feeding the anima... more inside

Some help needed middle of February
We live in a rural area and have a large garden. Our family has grown up and no longer live at home. There is always work to be done in the garden so people with some gardening experience or people willing to do some weeding or planting are very welcome. We also need to erect a willow fence and lay some paving slabs. You could even help with cleaning and ironing in the house. We live in an Irish speaking area but the community here is, of course, bilingual. The area is renowned for its traditional music and dance. We speak fluent English and Irish and some French and German. You will have your own room with every comfort and the house has two bathrooms. The house is big enough to allow you to be part of the family or have privacy if you need it. We would like you to work 4 hours per day, six days a week. There is a regular bus service to Dublin from our area and also a bus service to Galway. Fáilte faoi leith roimh dhaoine atá ag foghlaim Gaeilge.

I live on the beautiful Island of Inishturk. It is a small island, 5km x 2.5km, located 9 miles (14.5km) off the west coast of County Mayo, Ireland. With breath taking views of Irelands holy mountain Croagh Patrick. With a population of approximately 70 people, It is very picturesque and relatively untouched by commercialism. I am looking for one person to help me with light house work and help around the farm. In return I will provide meals and accommodation. Our house an old house (100+ years)that has being newly refurbished. Its located 50meters from the sea shore, overlooking the harbour. There will be lots of free time to enjoy the beauty of the island, we have some lovely beaches, stunning cliff walks, fishing, and relaxation. We have a Community Club, Shop and Library. In the summer months there is good traditional music and the locals love to sing and dance. Its a unique opportunity to experience the culture & history of the Island and its community.

I try to use as much natural methods of farming as possible. Help always appreciated during the year . Process and pack the milk for sale, make cheese. I also have a small kitchen garden. Only time I do not host is during the Christmas period. The work load is not very heavy. Volunteers have a bedroom with private toilet and shower. all modern conveniences in the house. Please be fluent in English. I do not have time to teach you English or to spend time explaining over and over again, due to lack of English, what needs doing and why it needs to be done I speak a little spanish. I have a policy of not hosting lone (alone) females - sorry. Neither do I host people under 21 years of age. A good sense of humour and not taking life too seriously is a bonus. I work a few days a week usually less than 3.... cleaning in house always welcome and some painting still to be done...a lot done, more to do....large back garden which needs a lot of maintenance in summer have a lovely plan for a front garden which has not been started yet... the plan is on paper and there is a model done. I am a single parent of a 14 year old guy who has been home educated but now in school till 4. I like to cook but equally enjoy not cooking if you want to cook, we enjoy being exposed to some new cultures and always treat helpxrs as part of the family. We live in a very beautiful area which has just won two awards for best kept town in Ireland. We live near the river and can give lifts to the nearby towns or there is a good bus service also, we're on the main Dublin Waterford link and you can get a bus direct from the airport to us.
