We are a friendly, ordinary family who moved to this beautiful remote village in Scotland some 9 years ago, to enjoy a better quality of life than we had in Stockport. We are currently building our house, a traditionally built, all masonry three storey property on a lovely plot of land overlooking the Sound of Mull. Unusually, our house is truly self-built, as we are carrying out all of the work ourselves and are not involving subcontractors apart from very specific items, for example, we brought in a subcontractor to excavate 2000 tons of rock from the site, where we have built our basement.
As there is a huge variety of different disciplines being employed in building the property, it is a fantastic opportunity for somebody to learn all about an enormous range of different construction techniques, and will include disciplines such as bricklaying, joinery, electrical work, plumbing, drainage and other skills.
We are offering the opportunity for someone to come and assist ... more inside

The Murray library Hostel is a newly opened hostel in Anstruther, a 10 minutes ride from St Andrews, Scotland. We've been working in the hostel industry for over 10 years, and we finally succeed to open our own place. The hostel is of 28 beds, a common area and a kitchen , right in front of the old harbour. We've always been working with volunteers in our past hostels and the experience has always been positive. It's the best way to keep the place lively on one hand and it has been culturally rich experience for the volunteers and for us on the other hand.
We've been living in Scotland for quite a while already, our background is French/Polish and Scottish from now on.
We need volunteers to ensure guests are being welcomed in a nice atmosphere and the place stays tidy. There shouldn't be any more than 20 hours of "real" work. Well, We do encourage the volunteers into pushing things up with their own idea and abilities, so photographers, social media pro, handy people are more tha... more inside

My girlfriend and I live in a village called Plockton which is by the sea in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland. We have a big house and garden which is in need of a bit of looking after. As we are really busy with work at the moment we don't have time to do it all ourselves so we need some help! The jobs would be some painting and a bit of gardening.

This is a small farm on the sea loch of Loch Broom, next to the fishing village of Ullapool which is 6 miles further along the coast.

We have sheep and cattle (including highland cattle) plus there are areas of wildlife management. On the farm there are two rivers which flow into the broom estuary, which support salmon, sea trout, otters and sea birds.

The farmhouse is located at the head of Loch Broom. We are in the process of developing the farm towards organic certification and doing work to live up to Scottish Agricultural Department biodiversity requirements.

The farm is organised by Jane and worked by our one day a week farmer Brian, Johnny and helpers.

We garden vegetables in a large poly tunnel and aim to eat and provide organic and sustainable food from the farm and local area.

Typical work hours are about four or five hours a day.
Typical jobs are clearing brush and coppicing for land management, sheep husbandry and clipping, renovations of a cottage... more inside

Hi, we are brother and sister Bethany and Jacob. We run a dog boarding kennels and equestrian stunt team in the Borders of Scotland. We set up our business in 2008 after 9 years living in France and doing our horse entertainment/circus/re enactment type shows. While we were living in France our parents were signed up to HelpX and had many interesting people staying with us.

The dog boarding kennels started because our grandparents have a kennels. We do our horse shows all over the UK and Europe mainly in the summer months with our 14 horses, the shows include lots of different skills including jousting, combat, fire breathing, circus tricks, dressage, stunt riding, dog training, live music and many more! Our shows are set to music and include costumes and props made by us.

We are vegetarian and don't smoke, people are most welcome when they are similar to us. We were taught at home all our lives, we are now 25 and 26. Anyone who comes to stay will find a friendly relaxed atmo... more inside
