My husband, Nic, our 3 young children and I farm at Greenbanks 20 km north of Mt Gambier in SA. We are solely sheep and cattle producers so our work mainly entails moving animals from paddock to paddock, drafting sheep and cattle, feeding some hay and grain to animals, building and mending fences, maintaining farm buildings and waters and just running a farm from day-to-day.
We have a self-contained bed-sitter accommodation with 2 single beds, kitchenette and comfortable chairs to relax in after work and a hot shower with a cold beer.
Work begins at 7.30 am after breakfast with a 15 minute morning tea break at 9.30 am and lunch at 12.00 midday. Inexchange for 4 hours work we provide accomodation and all of our backpackers food requirements for them to prepare themselves and often have them up to our house for evening meals during the week. There is the opportunity for paid work after the four hours are completed.
Additionally, we have a fully equipped workshop on the farm should your vehicle need maintenance. Mt Gambier, a town of 25,000 people is only 20 minutes away and has plenty of action for young travellers to see and do. There are a couple of back-packer lodges there as well should you wish to stick around and do different things in the district.
Both of us are keen to share our farming knowledge with young people and share the passion for farming with anyone who wishes to learn. We have taught many people such skills and crafts as low stress livestock handling, safe tractor and machinery operation, fencing, water pipeline construction and repairs, farm building construction and repairs, farm carpentry, welding, painting, gardening and much more. Nic holds a Certificate 4 in Assessment & Training and I am a qualified Soil Scientist.
We would love to hear from anyone wishing to work on our farm in exchange for free board and keep, training and loads of fun.
