La Volée is a beautiful farm in South West Normandy, home to a herd of rare Rocky Mountain horses living a natural life on the land. It is less than 1km to the village of Ger, which has shops and bars (one French, one English). Hosts Erica, Sarah and David are developing it as a nature retreat centre, and need help throughout the year with various tasks including cutting and clearing overgrown fields and woodland, gardening, building work, and horse care. We are passionate about the healing power of Nature and feel that this is a very special place. Sarah and David have successfully hosted many helpers in Devon, England, and are now looking forward to welcoming you to our new home with Erica in France.

Right now, we are looking for a team of helpers for one to two weeks from 23rd August - mid September to clear bracken and brambles, so the horses can have more areas to graze. You will need to be mature and responsible, and reasonably fit - we will be using a petrol driven brush cutter and sharp scythes (though there are some easier jobs to do, too). You will be given proper instruction in how to do the work. Even if you can’t manage these dates, please contact us if you would like to help some other time.

Accommodation this year will be in the large comfortable guest farmhouse, close to the hosts’ houses. There are two double rooms, two twin rooms and a dormitory. Although there is no WiFi in the guest house, you can access it in Erica’s house. Some meals will be shared with the hosts, and at other times you will need to prepare your own meals in the farmhouse kitchen (we provide all ingredients). We will be very happy if you would like to cook something for us! Although we are not vegetarian ourselves, we are happy to cater for vegans and vegetarians.

We expect you to work 4-5 hours per day, five days a week. In addition to this, we expect you to join in with normal household tasks, and keep the house clean and tidy. There will be plenty of time to relax and enjoy the delights of La Volée, which include a natural swimming pond, a tree tent in the woods and, of course, the friendly horses. (You do not need any previous experience of horses- we are happy to introduce you to them and show you how we work with natural horsemanship.) There will also be some opportunities for visits to nearby towns.

We are all native English speakers, and are happy to help you with your English if required. You will need to speak and understand at least a good basic level of English, though Erica speaks French.

We can collect helpers from Flers station, half an hour away, which is on the line from Paris. It may sometimes be possible to arrange lifts from Dinard or Rennes airports or Caen/Ouistreham ferry port.

We received some really nice reviews as HelpX hosts in the UK, which you can read in the reviews section. We hope our helpers in France will have an equally happy time with us!
