WE ARE FULLY BOOKED WITH VOLUNTEERS FOR THE SUMMER OF 2018.
Volunteers coming here need to be interested in a self sustainable life at the edge of the ordinary comfort zone. I'm CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR RESPONSIBLE PERSONS WHO ARE STRONG & HANDY, PREFERABLY WITH EXPERIENCE IN SOME SPECIFIC TASKS LIKE SANDING, PAINTING, CONCRETING, PLUMBING, CARPENTRY AND ELECTRICITY in order to help restoring the 100 year old lighthouse tower.
Skills in boat driving can be very helpful. SOMEONE TO HELP OUT MAKING FOOD IS ALSO WELCOME. THERE WILL ALSO BE SOME DIGGING AND GARDENING.
Life here is physically quite demanding, so we do need persons who are fit and enjoy an active life.
Coming here it is also necessary that you respect the physical facilities made available to you and do your daily and weekly share of cleaning - for respect of yourself, the house and the others.
After years receiving volunteers on shorter terms, WE NOW PREFER TO OFFER LONG TERM VOLUNTEERING. IN 2018 THIS MEANS THE FIVE MONTHS OF MAY - SEPTEMBER.
We are a non-profit organization and can therefore provide a letter for persons coming from overseas and wanting to stay longer than the ordinary 3 months in Schengen. At times, we may exceptionally accept volunteers for shorter periods linked to some special requirements, if you have some of the above mentioned qualifications.
Please write to us and describe any experience you may have relating to the tasks mentioned above. Also inform us about the period you are available. Please DO NOT APPLY IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANY OF THE MENTIONED SKILLS that we are looking for. We are currently busy with our ongoing projects and unfortunately don't have time to respond to not-relevant offers.
Depending on how long you are staying we do apply a TRIAL PERIOD of 2 weeks or 1 month, for every volunteer coming to the island. This will allow both parties to end the cooperation if things do not work out as desired.
We can accommodate up to 4 volunteers at a time; however, WE CANNOT ACCEPT COUPLES as our accommodation facilities do not provide enough privacy.
Our volunteers share a small house by the sea which used to be a boathouse. It has a nice living room, a small bathroom and a kitchenette on the ground floor; the first floor is sectioned into 4 separate sleeping spaces.
We normally share warm lunch together in the lighthouse keepers' house; breakfast is made in the boathouse and dinner is served also in the boathouse.
Our food is home-made and sound, often vegetarian, but we do use local and fresh fish quite often, sometimes also meat. We always make our own bread & jam.
Due to our off grid location in the Arctic and our daily routines WE CANNOT ACCEPT VOLUNTEERS WITH SPECIAL DIETRY REQUIREMENTS (i.e. vegans, different allergies & intolerances, etc).
When applying please consider the travel expenses before contacting us! The cheapest way to come here is normally with plane from Oslo (Gardermoen) to Harstad/Narvik (Evenes). Check out the website for Norwegian or SAS.
On an ordinary week day the airport shuttle bus to Sortland town is coordinating with flights if you're not arriving too late. Then bus from Sortland to Steine in BÝ where you're picked up by boat. The absolute best is to start early from Oslo, otherwise you'll arrive too late to reach the poor bus connections!
ALSO: REMEMBER TO SIGN UP FOR A TRAVEL & HEALTH INSURANCE. YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT CAN HAPPEN!
