We are a homeschooling family of 5 people and 3 cats who live in suburban Queens in 75-year old house and we could use help with the general maintenance/repairs.
The structure is sound, but it needs lots of cosmetic work and repairs.
There is no dearth of work that needs to be done.
We do *NOT* need help with daily household assistance, child care, or cooking. We prefer HelpXers in their 30s or older or couples. If you are still in your 20s and interested, please discuss your work ethic and work knowledge/experience in your request.
WE NEED INDEPENDENT SELF-STARTERS WHO DO NOT NEED CONSTANT SUPERVISION AND ASSISTANCE FROM US AND WHO ARE WILLING TO TAKE THE INITIATIVE TO COMPLETE TASKS AND COME TO US WITH QUESTIONS OR PROBLEMS AS THEY ARISE! ALSO IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO PUT IN THE HOURS PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND AS WORK ETHIC IS VERY IMPORTANT TO US.
WE NEED HELP WITH BIGGER AND SEASONAL WORK:
gardening (weeding, pruning, raking);
spackling and painting (interior and exterior);
fixing the driveway;
renovating our kitchen;
renovating our bathrooms;
replacing the front door and inside garage door;
polishing/finishing the wood floors on the first and second floors;
adding a bathroom in the basement;
refinishing the kitchen cabinets and counters.
Just look around and you will find things that need doing. In your email to us please mention what job you think you can do and also what experience you have in doing it.
We tend to be busy, so people who are independent self-starters who already have skills who do not need direct supervision are a better fit for us.
WE ARE ALSO LOOKING FOR:
an avid video gaming professional or hobbyist to give advanced training to our children;
someone with advanced online e-tail experience to help sell various items.
Our kitchen is stocked and you are more than welcome to help yourself.
We also have an outdoor propane grill available.
Please let us know in advance if you have special dietary needs and please remind us right before you arrive.
We have three large indoor Maine Coon and British Shorthair cats one of whom is blind.
Our yard is not fenced.
Our home has free wi-fi (it is not perfect, so if you need perfect coverage we are not the host for you) and TV (broadcast, but no cable and no satellite).
We have a guest room/den and two bedrooms in the basement (which needs someone to finish fixing it up) and a full pantry.
If you've always wanted to visit NYC, we are one mile (or a bus ride) from the subway which gets to Manhattan in about 45 minutes.
We are also 2 blocks from the Grand Central Parkway, for those with cars.
We request helpers provide the equivalent of 5-6 hours per day per person 5 or 6 days a week of work.
We usually don't have any set rules about working as long as people put in the time overall.
Please let us know in your request if you prefer certain working hours/times of day or if you prefer to work shorter times daily or longer days and have more free days.
We don't have a farm or B&B, etc., that needs scheduled work times so we try to be really flexible.
We know it's tiring to work and tiring to go sightseeing.
We think it's better to do both without restrictions so we usually give some idea about things that need to be done and let you work it out.
There are many things to choose from and not everyone is cut out for everything.
Some enjoy one job and not another and we find it's best to let people do what they enjoy.
We have included a picture of our first HelpXer, Alice, with our older son.
Our second picture is Carla, with our daughter in the dining room that Carla prepped and painted.
Our third picture shows Sylvain and Eva on the kitchen floor they tiled.
The fourth picture shows Nico with the front walkway he completely replaced (before he completed the job).
The fifth picture shows Albert and Azu building a magical swing in our front yard.
The sixth picture shows James removing 70 year old paint from the radiator cover in our front yard.
