Saumede is a hamlet in Galicia from the 17th century and is made up of 20 (more or less) small houses and out buildings. Today it is a ruin of granite stone and clay tiles with a few classic Horreos (stone and wood crafted buildings for food storage) and one restored traditional community oven. This small village is surrounded by traditional family farms, creeks, giant oaks and chestnut trees. Saumede has been abandoned for over thirty years, up until one French association and another Gallega organization revived the town in 2010 with their united objective of creating a community inspired by the arts, culture and natural world.

Today there are four people living at Saumede along with some beloved animals (a dog, cats, chickens, rabbits, goats, and the donkey.) During the festival Ao ComPaz, in August, more people come to camp, enjoy the festival and the beautiful landscape, and give a helping hand.

The volunteers can collaborate with us on helping the work crew during the week to rebuild part of the village using the principles of bioconstruction, traditional techniques and designs and using natural, local materials.

Saumede is geographically located in the municipality of A Bola, an area full of pursuits for the nature lover. Volunteers can spend their free time getting to know the Biosphere Reserve, observing wildlife, enjoying the many streams, rivers and swimming holes, and meandering through the mountains and tiny historic villages. Celanove and Allariz are two larger towns nearby that offer basic services such as restaurants, shops, banks, a pharmacy and health center.
