My town, my neighbors, and hundreds of people need help. The 7.8 earthquake that destroyed most of the buildings in Canoa also took lives, employment and housing. We are recovering and will be hopefully better than before but in the meanwhile it will take a lot of dedicated people to keep the wheels turning.
A few such people showed up in Canoa with a direct goal to help the youth of the encampments. They are called YMA (youth motivation association) and they reach out into the communities to help alleviate the kids boredom, educate and entertain. They have been trained to identify stress in kids and to seek out appropriate help. Their system is a three hour day and the rest if your time. For that you will get housing and a kitchen but must supply your own food.
We want a few people to join our group of 6 volunteers from all over the world to help us play, educate and interact with the youth of Canoa and surrounding areas.
Work hours are 3 per day. You teach during the week and on the weekends you are expected to put a few hours into your living space to keep it clean and improved. Hours will depend on the weather/heat. No food is included in this exchange but you will have a kitchen.
Canoa and San Vicente are 10 minute bus ride away and bus stop is a short walk from the house. Beach is a 10 minute walk and surf is everywhere.
Local markets are on the bus route and offer cheap fresh food options. The place is a mini-paradise with 15km of beach to walk and play on. It has suffered a shock but it will recover with help.
If you have experience with trauma, teaching kids, or anything you can share with kids that is a bonus but all enthusiasm is welcome.
