We are a three generation, 4 person family working on leading a more self sufficient life.
In the spring we make maple syrup out at the farm. We have approximately 300 taps, we collect sap by hand and boil it down on our wood fired evaporator. It is a labour of love with sweet rewards! We can always use help during syruping season, which generally runs from late February, through to mid April. It's a fun, very Canadian experience!
We have an organic garden that seems to get bigger every year. We mostly just grow food for ourselves, if we have any surplus we sell it at a local farmers market. Last fall we put in over 1000 garlic cloves and we hope to have a big harvest this summer. Mid-summer through fall we generally can use help in the gardens, and also with preserving the harvest.
We live in town where we also do some gardening, and keep chickens and bees. The farm is where we make the maple syrup and where the majority of our gardens are located.
We are close to Algonquin Park, and in the midst of some of the best canoe territory in the country. There are many beautiful lakes and natural places to explore up here! Fall is a particularly beautiful time of year as the trees turn the most amazing array of colours. In the spring, summer and fall there are a number of lovely markets and festivals in Ontario where you can experience Canadian culture and music. In the winter, things slow down around these parts but for the outdoor enthusiast there is plenty to do up in our area; cross country skiing, ice fishing, skating, and dog sledding.
We have a variety of projects that are in the works in town and at the farm including garden prep and tending, preserving the harvest, wood lot management, building projects, cutting firewood, syruping, and others.
We also have plenty of knowledge and skills to share! We look forward to meeting new friends and hope you are able to find yourselves here for a time...
