helpers wanted for September

Kia ora
We are a couple living on a large lifestyle block on the edge of the Waima river arm of the Hokianga Harbour. We have a 19 year old son who sometimes stays and helps.
There’s a variety of work around the house, bush, gardens and farmland
The property is a mixture of pasture, orchard, remnant native forest and undulating land in transition back to native bush. We also have a lot of tough weeds we are clearing. The work is demanding so people usually take a few days off in the middle of a stay to go on an adventure in the far north
Ideal stay 1 week or 2 weeks with a few days away in middle

We try to incorporate permeculture and spend most of our time working outside. Our farm follows the Ohuri river with a magical mangrove forest and native wetland for about a kilometre to the confluence with the Waima river.

We have 2 spare rooms in a separate area of our big historic house that was part of the hotel in Rawene 100 years ago. It`s very comfortable and private but we all share the same bathroom.

4 - 4.5 hours work for every night stayed.
Work is before lunch so afternoons are free to explore
We will provide 3 big healthy meals each day with delicious food including homemade muesli, fresh and mostly organic foods, homemade bread, preserves and guacamole
Kombucia and fruit with lunch
Coffee and fruit with breakfast
We make a lot of different fermented foods and produce our own meat on the farm

You can help yourself to whatever fruit and nuts you can find in our orchard. We currently have some unusual citrus varieties and macadamia nuts, tropical cherimoyas and bananas with more fruits ready towards summer. We produce our own organic meat here on the farm and have a big vege garden that has a few things in it now and lots will soon emerge from the spring mud.

The work
Weeding in gardens and around recent native tree plantings. There is a lot of work in clearing weeds and other general physical work. We are also planting trees and ramming some fence posts.
There is always lots to do. We try to mix up the jobs each day to keep it interesting and we go to the mineral hot pools some nights under the stars.

It`s important for us that atleast one member of the group is enthusiastic and a good communicator and that everyone is friendly and easy going.

We work very hard everyday and also expect this of you.
Helpers need to be fit and active with strong backs and hands

We have 2 kayaks for you to use. This is safe and amazing in the tidal wetland and interconnecting rivers.. The water is full of fish and amazing wildlife with authentic scenery around every corner.

Prefer you have own car.

The property is close to many historic towns, the Opononi sand dunes, Nga Pha Springs hot pools, Tane mahuta and lots of beautiful West Coast beaches.

The property most often has great mobile coverage for `2 degrees` and `vodaphone`. No wifi, but we have power, rain water, hot shower, fireplace, brazier and all the furnishings for a comfortable retreat.

Check out our face-book page, see link above

In the afternoons you can explore the beautiful authentic Hokianga area.

There are a few friendly horses and foals, cows and calves on the property.

We also have a very friendly dog (probably the best dog in the world), a nanny goat, free ranging happy chickens and more
