This is an historic single-family farm located 20 minutes outside of Indianapolis, which offers numerous sports, dining, shopping and entertainment opportunities.
We raise suri alpacas and chickens. In addition to breeding and selling animals, we sell fleece and have launched an agri-tourism business to educate and entertain all ages.
Depending on the time of visit, work can range from hay baling to special projects like cleaning barns, planting the garden and weeding beds to various herd health duties, halter training or breeding assistance.
***Participation is REQUIRED for daily chores of scooping, feeding and watering in addition to special projects. Anyone who shirks these duties without good cause or prior approval will be asked to leave.
Hours of work will vary, depending on time of year and projects. The number of hours required also depends on whether you want meals and local transportation included. Please do not expect meals to be provided on days you do not work.
Cooking privileges are extended with prior approval upon two additional conditions: clean up after yourself and no animal products can be prepared here. We maintain a vegan kitchen: no animal products are consumed here. None of our animals are butchered or sold to slaughter. We put the health and welfare of all animals first.
We don't accept helpers from October until spring.
We no longer accept helpers without some farm experience or experience with livestock/large animals.
We are happy to teach/train/coach, but we prefer helpers who have some basic knowledge and can work beside us as a team and also independently on simple things without supervision. That does not mean hiding in the guest room all day. Helpers are required to contribute. This is not a vacation destination or a hotel.
If you have any experience/skill with power tools, tractors or other things, please let us know. We sometimes have projects that require this kind of knowledge.
**Sorry, but we cannot accommodate pets.
*Private guest room with shared bath
We have large dogs, lots of cats and plenty of chickens underfoot. Please respect them; this is their home.
*Helpers are expected to clean up after themselves and abide by bio-security measures.
*No disrespect of any animals or humans (including any contractors or volunteers working on the farm) will be tolerated!!!
*Outside pets are not allowed on the farm.
*Smoking and drugs are not permitted on the farm.
*Applicants must have a Helpx profile and photo to be considered.
*****Shorts stays welcome.*****
