We are in year 2 of our new 30 acre sustainable farm outside La Plata in Northeast Missouri. We need help to get the farm started and care for our 17 month old child! Helping with cooking, dishes, and baby care would be great! As well as some work on our many farm projects.

We are part of a larger 160 acre community with our close neighbors who run an intentional community and outdoor education center. All three communities are dedicated to integral nonviolence (meaning to self, others, earth, institutions, etc.) including electricity & petroleum free living, gift economy, communal living, simplicity, etc. We live a simple life on the farm (which we very much enjoy!). We have two buildings on the land: a medium-sized barn/workshop that acts as our office, community hangout, tool storage area, storm shelter…and a small one room cabin that we hope to be completed by the winter. Some of the projects we are working on are: finishing cabin, improving basic living systems (composting toilet, laundry, etc.), building small items like outdoor table, benches, work tables, chicken tractor, etc., planting fall trees, planting/maintaining vegetable garden, continuing permaculture design of the land, and much more!

All meals provided. Tent camping available. We can provide tent and bedding. For longer term visitors indoor space might be available in the workshop. We expect 4-6 hours a day of help. We are usually good at matching the interests of volunteers with our needs on the farm. We co-design the visit with each volunteer that arrives so that it will be an enjoyable experience. We’d love to answer any questions and work out the details of a visit!

We helped start our community in 2009 in Chicago as a house of hospitality to those in need and then added an organic vegetable farm outside Chicago, IL in Monee. We are expanding our work in Missouri and hope to continue our ministry to those in need as we get our basic farm needs established. There are plenty of additional opportunities on the 160 acres like classes on permaculture, wild edibles, primitive skills, nonviolent communication, canning/preserving vegetables, natural building, etc. Plenty of self entertainment is available on the 160 acres….community plays, puppet shows, music jams, birthday parties, sports playing, weekly craft nights, etc. The 160 acres hosts over 1000 visitors a year, so there is plenty of opportunities to meet people from all over the country and the world doing fascinating things.
The nearest town is La Plata which is 6 miles away and has a public library and an Amtrak station! So it is easy to get to us by mass transportation. We have extra bikes available for visitors to use. Kirksville is 12 miles away and is a small college town. There is a good article about our community if you search on the internet for our community name and “Marquette Magazine”.

Our community is part of a movement that is composed of over 200 communities worldwide of many different faiths (not just Catholic) that are committed to nonviolence, voluntary poverty, prayer, hospitality for the homeless, exiled, hungry, and forsaken, and protest of injustice and violence of all forms. To learn more about the movement, the best book is probably “Loaves & Fishes” by Dorothy Day (co-founder).

Other skills – Our neighboring intentional community are often working on a variety of interesting projects like Straw bale house building, goat & cow milking, hand tool repair, bike maintenance, canning, spoon carving, fermenting foods, horse care, etc. There could be opportunities for visitors to volunteer with some of these projects on occasion.
