We are Andrew and Flora - a young couple from Scotland and Hungary.
We purchased this property in 2017 from Steve, who established the Ecopark seven years ago. We live together with Flora’s parents and our small dog, learning about organic gardening & sustainability, experiencing with eco-construction.
Set on the getaway of the beautiful Santa Lucia River, your volunteering experience will take place in a nationally protected area, including a stream, a little lake, a bamboo forest, eucalyptus groves, ancient pines, palms, armadillos. You can spot rabbits, foxes, giant lizards, watch a seemingly endless variety of birds and butterflies.
This riverside wonderland is an hour north of Montevideo by car. It's a quiet, peaceful and eco-friendly oasis. We have a large organic garden, we also harvest guayabas, wild berries from the forest.
We have two types of work for which we need help, please specify in your application for which type of work you would be suitable
1. To maintain the property which includes:
Clearing and maintaining walking paths
Cutting and storing fire wood
Help in the garden (garden bed preparation, planting, harvesting)
General maintenance of houses and surroundings
2. Improvement of the property & houses & furniture which includes
Change of all electricity sockets, updated existing electricity lines
New furniture to be built from wood / bamboo, such as chairs, shelves, structures etc.
Renovation of roofs, walls, including painting, plastering, souring material etc.
We're especially looking for volunteers who
- have experience with assisting in electricians / builder /carpenter work
- preferably speaks Spanish (not a must but a plus!)
- have initiative and are hard-working, takes work seriously
- can be independent outside of working hours
Volunteers should have durable shoes or boots with thick sole for work in diverse terrain.
We require a 2 week minimum stay.
Volunteers help 5 hours/day, 5 days per week (2 days off)
Next available positions from September 2018.
We offer volunteers accommodation in a separate house, which has two bedrooms with private entrance and private bathroom. Couples can stay in the double bedroom ensuite and singles have their own separate room (twin beds).
Solar hot water showers are located about a minute walk from all houses.
We also provide food for breakfast (milk, cereal, jam, butter, eggs, bread, tea).
We also provide some organic veggies from the garden - depending on the season! (You can have fresh crispy salads, sweet tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, radish beetroot etc.)
We also offer free use of washing machine & detergent. (Once a week)
Volunteers have access to bicycles . Afternoons and weekends can be spent on the river, exploring the property, or riding in the countryside. The property includes a horseshoe bend in the Santa Lucia River known as “La Isla”, with private beaches and a secluded lagoon. The small town of Aguas Corrientes is a five-minute bike ride away. The Club Nautico of Aguas Corrientes offers inexpensive kayak lessons and has a beautiful beach that is open to the public. Weekend or day trips to Montevideo are easy. Buses run 10 times a day. The trip takes an hour and a half and costs about 80 pesos.
