We are currently seeking assistance from a single or a couple who can help us with pruning the orchard and preparing our vegetable gardens for spring planting.

Blue Penguin Farm is a 14 acre permaculture-based farm with great ocean views over the small coastal town of Penguin in Tasmania's North West. Our farm is unique in that it offers a great exposure to farm life within walking distance to a vibrant small seaside village and the beach.

Helpers will participate in many aspects of our diverse and active farm work, including gardening, vineyard work, harvesting, and working with us on our food preservation and/or building projects in exchange for room and meals. Accommodation will be in a loft mezzanine. Extra benefits for Helpers include free internet, farm-produced wine, and occasional transportation to town.

We have a small fruit orchard, lemon grove, and vineyard. We also have small numbers of free-range, grass-fed cattle and lambs, which we grow both for our own use and for income. We are currently developing plans to build farm stay accommodation, where guests will eventually be able to participate in farm activities with us. Currently 4 friendly adults (Australian, American, and Italian) and one 10-year-old child live on the farm, along with one dog and cat.

Our farm residents all love to cook and are passionate about Tasmanian produce. We love to enjoy the best of farm and broader Tasmanian seasonal produce available to us. Helpers will be invited to share in creating and cooking some of the best farm produce and wine that Tasmania has to offer.

Our farm ethos is built around a lifestyle where we strive to eat locally and ethically, providing as much of our food as possible from our own farm. We raise animals for food, but we ensure they lead happy lives while they are with us. We raise lots of fruit and veggies and draw from a wide range of local produce to supplement what we grow ourselves. We hope to host Helpers who share our ethos or want to learn more about it. We are, of course, happy to cater to Helpers with health conditions requiring special attention to meal preparation, but people with strong ethical feelings against consuming animal-produced products may be happier choosing different HelpX hosts.

Our ideal Helpers will be fit, non-smoking, and capable of performing high energy work such as digging and planting, although we seek to ensure that we provide a mix of strenuous and easier activities during your stay. We can accommodate either two singles or two partnered couples.

We are looking forward to a great cultural exchange with our Helpers, where we can share our Aussie lifestyle and also learn more about your country and culture.

We are on the Northwest Coast of Tasmania, 3 1/2 hours drive from Hobart and 1 1/4 hrs drive from Launceston and 1/2 hour from the Spirit of Tasmania port in Devonport. The nearest large town is Burnie.
